Hands free kit for C5 X7

Post by atr »

I own a C5 equipped with a RD4 radio that doesn't have the BT that enables it to serve as a mobile hands free. since I want to have the hands free option, I thought of the possibility to buy a RD45 radio and replace the existing one, but I think that it might be a little complicated (especially finding the right unit with the matching color panel ans so on...). the other option is to buy a hands free kit. so, I would like to have your opinion and maybe recommendation from members who used this option.
one more question, please. is there a possibility to install a double din radio (on this vehicle, of course) in the place where the MFD is? I guess that if it's possible, another fascia has to be used. I was thinking about this, since I have a double din multimedia unit that includes the hands free function and a gps built in.
Thanx.

A double din unit won’t go where the MFD is, as that is only for the display. The required harness is below that where the Head Unit is mounted The PSA double din unit was a Navidrive 3D unit and that replaced the head unit in the centre console. You loose the oddments tray with this option.

This is the NG4 Navidrive unit I have and shows where a double DIN goes. Yes you would need a new fascia and be aware there are 2 sizes (not widely known by the dealer) depending on any unit you fit.

IMG_1125.JPG
There are plenty of PSA upgrade options to go- RT4, RT6, MyWay (RNEG) or the NG4 Navidrive 3D I mentioned.

Replacing any Head Unit with a non PSA unit will cripple certain features and options, so be aware of this as they are not just radio players of course. Also expect to loose steering wheel control functionality and some other functions if you attempt to put in another non OEM unit. Some additional harnesses may be available to provide some basic control - depending on the aftermarket solution, but not really recommended.

Most members use one of the PSA options as it maintains all functionality.

You can of course get the Nomad unit and install that for hands free.

This is the Bluetooth Hands Free Module I was referring to:

I believe the RD4 is already compatible with this option. Bear in mind this list shows other equipment and options that won't be fitted to your car, but the Bluetooth Hands Free Kit is item 2, and this shows where it should be mounted behind the dash. There should already by the harness connection there that connects to the unit. The other end of this will be already part of the Quadlock connector bottom left connection. So once installed, and configured with Lexia, it should be ready.

The part for the Bluetooth Module varies according to build date and needs to be coded to your VIN, but should be either 6593G6 or 6593G5 and the mounting support is 6593NA.

They are no longer available AVI from the dealership new as stocks ran out, because of the later RD45 unit having the Bluetooth module built in and of course subsequent systems that also incorporated built in handsfree. Your only way to get one is second hand from searching on either of the 2 parts I gave you. The only difference between them is one was when the VIN was specified on ordering and pre-VIN coded and the other requires VIN coding to your car using Lexia. I included both part numbers as you can use any as both will have to be recoded to your VIN anyway.

I still think it may be easier for you plump for the RD45 unit - but as you are already looking for another screen you may be able to get the head unit and the screen as a set. I'll have a quick search for you.

Have a look at this one Avi:

They are selling the Head Unit, the Screen, will VIN code it for you (and you won't need to pay the extra as you don't have parking assistance or a CD changer on your vehicle), the bluetooth Mic, the AUX Line in for headphones or Aux in devices, the USB cable so you can play MP3s from a USB device etc.

Plus of course it will provide Bluetooth audio streaming too.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-307- ... rk:11:pf:0

Might be the better option for you as it includes everything you need in one kit and is a reasonable price for all of the items. It should also save you hunting about for separate bits.

I have recently done the RD45 upgrade on my Peugeot 308, and providing you do your homework and order a unit compatible with your car, it is an easy upgrade.

The only 2 things to keep in mid are that there were several variations to the RD4 and RD45 facia panel, some with different dimensions, others with just different colour plastic and slightly different buttons or knob positions. Some styles were never made for the RD45, but it is generally possible to retrofit your old RD4 front panel to an RD45 (I had to do this, as my 308 has a rare dashboard colour). If you post a photo of your RD4 front panel, and the dimensions, it may be possible to give some more specific advice.

The other point is that most of the RD45 on the market have a single radio tuner (single antenna), but many PSA vehicles were fitted with RD4 with dual tuners (two antennae). It is quite permissible to fit a single antenna RD45, but perhaps the signal reception in marginal conditions will not be as good.

Another minor point is that the RD45 has a class-D audio amplifier, with a bit more power (35W per channel) than the RD4.

Thanx for your detailed response. I understood that this option - upgrading to RD45 is the easiest way, so in an attempt to find a RD45 radio, I went today to a breakyard. I was surprised to find there a X7 saloon , year 2010 , according to the yard's owner but it equipped with a double din screen instead of the MFD. again , according to the owner, it is original and genuine and was installed in later models. I've pictured it for you to see. the radio installed in the vehicle seems to be RD4 (pic attached) according to the explanation given by Marc (the writing on the knob at the upper right side). btw - this vehicle is equipped with shock absorbers , not the hydraulic suspension.
I will appreciate your comments.

Highly unlikely that this was fitted at factory - those screens were only fitted for systems with navigation. The RD4 or RD45 is NOT such a system. I suspect, although I can't confirm yet (subject to VIN), that the previous owner possibly originally had a MyWay or eMyWay (RNEG or RT6 / RNEG2 as they are also known) and has removed this before scrapping it as he / she knows that it can fetch a good price on the second hand market!

It looks like a standard RD4 was fitted in its place....

I can of course confirm all this if you can get the VIN for me from the windscreen aperture.

Ok, I got that Avi.

My suspicions are confirmed!

This car was originally fitted with a standard RD4 head unit AND small standard Monochrome Level 'C' screen!

So the previous owner has at some point upgraded to one of the models I listed in my previous post - then after either an accident or scrapping it has decided to remove the head unit as it is relatively easily done, and replaced it with the original unit. Obviously he couldn't do the screen as quickly, because that needs the old fascia surround and all that extra work.

So there you go, I hope that explains it.

When you fitted the RT6 did you change the microphone wiring to go directly to the connector on the head unit?
On the RD4 it would have been wired into the hands-free adapter.
