Multifunction display compatibility - C5

Post by atr »

Hi
on my c5 x7 the multifunction display has a problem. there is a bright spot on the middle of it and the info is (very) hardly visible. since I have the mfd from my previous c5 mkii, I would like to know if it's compatible with the one fitted in the x7? pic of the faulty mfd attached.

Avi - do we have the VIN of your current X7, as although the X7 with standard display uses the 'Level C' multifunction display, there are a significant number of variations, according to build date, country and options, so I would have to check. I have your old VIN for the MK II, so can do a comparison.

Ok, so as expected, different parts.

Your MK II was 6593T2 (Part to be configured) or;
659359 (Part configured)

Your X7 part is 6593T8 (Part to be Configured) or;
6593T9 (Part configured)

These are all EMF 'C' screens, but I suspect that the firmware and software versions will be different Avi between models. Be aware that the MFD have their own ECUs that have significant control over the Head Units, so have to have the correct level and type of software - especially as the older C5s did not support Bluetooth and the later screens did...

At least you have the part numbers to search on.

Thanx Marc
You've mentioned that the newer MFD's have a BT function as well. I've tried today to pair my cellphone to the vehicle but since it didn't recognized the vehicle (even though there is a pushbutton with a phone icon on the steering wheel) and nothing appeared on the MFD. is it possible that the BT was optional and not installed on all vehicles (mine is the "comfort" version)?

There were 2 options (excluding the navigation models) that utilised Bluetooth. One was the RD4 which had to utilise the Nomad hands free unit that was a separate module to handle calls and secondly this was later replaced with the RD45 unit which had Bluetooth and USB built into the Head unit (not the MFD).

You only have the RD4 basic system in your car, and according to your VIN there is no hands free unit fitted either, although you have the microphone already installed.

So you’ll probably need to do an RD4 to RD45 upgrade if you want hands free Bluetooth calling Avi.

Another way to identify the RD45 unit is that they do not have the PTY marking on the fascia.

Marc - could you pls clarify how the upgrading to the RD45 is done? I guess that some sort of a device is needed. could you elaborate on it?
what is the PTY marking and where it can be seen?
Thanx.

I've moved this thread to the Telematics section Avi.

Have a good read through this topic, as Elis has done the upgrade himself:

I've checked and unfortunately, it is the RD4 , not RD45, if I got it right, so in order to be able to make it work with my cellphone, it needs to be changed to a RD45 radio.
One other thing - I've seen on Aliexpress this MFD. they claim that it's for C5 (among others). here is a link to it. is there a way to make sure that it will fit (since they say that it displays BT as well, which doesn't exist in my case.

The RD45 plus correct MFD level and software version must be used for the system to work Avi. I can’t speak for anything from Ali****** as I don’t use them and can’t reply you if these are clones, copies or what.

Most people I know who have undertaken the upgrade have got their units from eBay who have upgraded again to another system with navigation. They at least know they are compatible and work.

Regarding the other screen, if you have it, try it, you can always swap it back. I've fitted 2 emf-c screens to my 407, both were from citroens. I think a c4 and a c3. The first wouldn't do the bluetooth with my rd4, the 2nd did. I did need Diagbox to tell it what the car had, and the ECU for the screen is 'unknown' when doing a global test, but they both work. The first I reset to monozone AC and it is now in a 407 in Toulouse, confirmed as working. When I paired the phone I had to ask the car to find the phone, not the phone to find the car. Difficult in your case because the screen is illegible.

Pete - as per your suggestion to try the " other screen", are you referring to the screen that was installed on my former C5 mkii, or to the screen on Ali that I've posted the link to it? one more thing that I would like to learn - what is an EMF-C screen that you have mentioned?
Thanx.

The EMF 'C' is a certain level of hardware. PSA produced many versions of these screens for their vehicles - many were different and specific to the factory options and head units fitted to each vehicle. The EMF 'C' screen is the particular hardware level that you need to work with the RD45 Head Unit. You won't of had this in your previous C5 II Avi as I already checked and it was a different part number and secondly, because the earlier models did not support Bluetooth.

Avi, I meant try the screen you already have, nothing lost. Regarding the Chinese copies, they need Diag to open up the options anyway and also come with limited languages. My 407 is 2006 and had bluetooth as an option, the first screen I pulled from the tat yard worked after reconfiguring it but didn't have the bluetooth option, the 2nd, again from the tat yard, did. It was from a much later car,the date on the back says 2009, and it was from a Citoen C3. I can't believe that PSA would make so many different models. I think they make a few variants, then the rest is down to the configuration within Diag.
The original, the 2nd and the 3rd all had different part nos. and were from different years.
If you've got one....try it.

Sorry Pete - I'm going to have to disagree with you there...

You have to understand that the electronic architecture is different on certain models from certain dates and the compatibility of the ECUs with the BSI as an example. There are of course examples where PSA will use the exact same part number for a Citroen and a Peugeot model and do list identical parts numbers. But they are NOT all the same when the part numbers are different and another reason why we have people coming back with problems afterwards as they have not used the correct display. Peugeot and Citroen also display the vehicle information differently, this is another factor and can affect the vehicle if miss-configured.

Let's take the C5 II as an example; there are 5 available screens, discounting the large colour screen in the diagram that leaves 4. Of these 4, there are 8 variations.
C5 II Screens.PNG
So what are the variations?
  • Clock, Temp but without Radio to Dec 2005
  • Clock, Temp but with / without Radio Dec 2005 to June 2006
  • Clock, Temp but with Radio From June 2006
  • Then we have Sept 2005 with no radio and again with radio but with DRLs
  • Then we have Radio, Clock, Outside Temp & CD from Sept. 2004 and except China
  • Next,Clock, Temp Radio & DRLs April 2005 to March 2006
  • Next China only from June 2006
  • Then Navigation, Radio, Clock, CD to July 2005
  • Then Navigation, Radio, Clock, CD from July 2005
These are not the same units and are designed to work with a certain software level and BSI. Even some of the EMF C screens have to be of a certain software level to support certain functions - Bluetooth being one of them. In this case V.71 or later.
