Berlingo 1.4 VDO, no throttle?

Post by Berridale »

I have a Berlingo with the petrol 1.4 engine with VDO devices.
Sometimes the throttle goes dead, first noticed it going over a bumpy cattle grid.
I replaced the throttle body but no good.
So now i just unplug the TPS /throttle position sensor and it is OK for a while.

Anybody had this one?
I have ordered one from the Uk as i can't get one here, most Berlingo with Bosch.

Changed the fuel pump , checked connections , changed TPS-new, Throttle body.

We are on a farm , very steep and it won't go up the hill now and dies , sometimes on bumps, cattle -grid.
There don't appear to be any relays, all done in the computer , so the manual says.
The VDO system has a seperate cable wheel Throttle position sensor, unlike the Bosch.

When it dies it just has little throttle response and you disconnect the battery , or turn it off and re-start and it is ok for a while.

Any ideas?

Vin-VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

It runs OK as long as you don't up the very steep bumpy hill to the farm .
To it into town today on the bitumen road and it went partially dead on the throttle.
Turned it off a couple of times and came good.

So you have a BERLINGO VU (M59) SHORT VAN '800' 1.4i 75 (TU3JP) Manual gearbox 5

This system has SAGEM injection ECU and system (not VDO). It was fitted with one of 2 systems for TPS - it will wither be contained in the accelerator pedal or it will have a mechanical linkage to the TPS in the engine bay:
Berlingo TPS A.PNG
Berlingo TPS B.PNG
I know some of these early ones suffered with ignition coil issues, but it really needs hooking up to Lexia to get some fault codes - any you do get may help us further.

Cable to TPS.
All parts clearly labeled VDO, Throttle Body, TPS.

Checked the fault codes today.
PO135.
So then replaced the O2 sensors to clear the dash light.
After this there was no dash light even after driving in the heat of summer today. 38' here.
I did about 40klms in the heat went up the hill no problems .
Seems fixed.

Odd thing is that the dash light and the fault have been there for about two years, never missed a beat til recently.
Seems it was the exhaust sensor in the extreme heat.
Very few vans here with this VDO set-up.

Yes the Sagem is the injection system as it left the factory - so there may be other components like the TPS that are made by VDO. As I think I mentioned, that will be an emissions related fault so P0135 is the upstream oxygen sensor heating control. Glad it's sorted.
