*I never did get my hands on one, which is perhaps why I've got issues with it just 50k (ish) miles later; so anyone who's got one they're willing to part with, do let me know.

The centering tool is only required to re-mate the box and engine - the first time you press the clutch the disc will self centre anyway, and if it's not lined up, you won't be able to get the box back on. If you buy a Valeo clutch, they usually come with a plastic dowel to centre the clutch. CitroNut never used to use one, he just centred the plate by eye with the clutch loosely nipped up. I've got one of these: Draper tool

50k would be about the life expected from a re-manufactured clutch, especially if it was a Transmech one....

So it's what I would call a clutch alignment tool then!

aha, well its not dodgy coz of failing to use the centre-ing tool then.

Rather irritatingly, often being a Cheapskate, this was not one such occasion; I paid a bit extra for a Borg & Beck.

The Thrust Bearing is noisy and the pedal effort required went from near zero when new to what I'd now consider 'excessive', suggesting worn 'fingers' on the Pressure Plate.

I was careful to be really mean with the Grease on the Gearbox main shaft, could I have been too mean?

I did consider sorting it, a while back, but the Gearbox has seen better days anyway (worn Synchro on second) and I have a spare; so if it goes one day and I have to drive it home as a 'Crash' I'm not overly bothered.

...and MOT time approaches. I suspect I've got a lower engine mount gone, the Rad's defo got a leak on the NS Saddle-tank, the LSV spring is out of adjustment, the coolant is manky and I suspect the Battery's not going to last the winter. Not overly fussed tho. Rad's are a surprisingly cheap £70 Brand new, so I shall see how 'generous' I'm feeling in the pocket and whether my contact will sell me a decent s/h one.

You mean the shaft that the plate slides along and passes power into the gearbox? I thought that was supposed to be completely dry, i.e. NO lubrication at all. Of have things changed since I did my last clutch change?

yes, that one. 'Gearbox Input Shaft' think it might be called. From memory, I think most likely the BoL said to grease it sparingly, but naturally that could've been a lie; t'was nearly 5 years ago. I'm in the habit of having a good read of it prior to a big job

Having done just the one clutch change in my life Paul, I'd be a bit inclined to think that you're considerably more learned than I am. You might even know why Gearbox oil doesn't half pong!

I haven't done a CV joint since the GS in about 1986 but recall the grease in there being particularly obnoxious, much worse than gear oil.

Thanks to everybody for their advice on diy clutch replacement. The cheapest quote I could get was £750 for dmf and clutch kit fitted, parts been around £320-£350. So with £400 labour costs I am going to give it a go myself.
