No start please Help
Hi all
I am in a spot of trouble i have a little 306 1.9 Diesel turbo been a nice little car, i have today 17/12/2018 changed the glow plugs as had a big smoke issue the change of glow plugs has cured the smoke issue as it started straight away however after it started it took it for a drive and all was fine got home swtched off and didnt think any more about the car, BUT!!!!!! after sitting for a few hours and obviously cold the car will now not start!
i have tried the warming plugs up with the 3 or 4 times trick with no joy, i have bled the fuel bowl but again no joy
any help ad guidance would be great guys

Re: No start please Help
Hi, and welcome!
That sounds very sudden. Check that 12v is reaching the stop solenoid (on top of the injector pump) as soon as the IGN is switched on, and remains powered up until the IGN is switched off, including while cranking.
If that's OK, try pumping the fuel priming bulb until it goes solid, and then continue to pump it while cranking the engine. (You may need an extra pair of hands with this.)
Apart from the smoke, did the car start OK (if hesitantly) beforehand?

Re: No start please Help
Reason for suggesting the continual pumping is to try to combat any air-in-fuel, which injection pumps don't like handling.

Re: No start please Help
Yes, more than likely the feed wire has come off which powers the entire rail. Plug 2* should have the terminal for the Glowplug rail and a second connector on it, which is the feed from the Relay (taped white in my photo).
Done my own Glowplugs just today, oddly enough.
*Cylinder No. 3. Contrary to logic, you count right to left, so No.4 is at the CamBelt end
NB: I was surprised to note a tightening torque for these of just 15-20Nm, not very tight at all... and delighted that they all came undone no problem at all, after a week's daily Plus-Gasing and running up to temp first.

Re: No start please Help
Alas, that's one of those jobs where the BoL might say something like "considerable dexterity is required".
I can usually get them started on the thread by holding them between index finger and long finger, but I've dropped a lot of them too.
If the feed wire is long enough, there's no reason not to put it on a more accessible plug, ideally not 1 or 4, which will leave less obstacles in your way.
You can prove that this is the problem quite easily. hold the feed wire on the top of one of the plugs and have somebody start it. If it starts easily, perhaps with a slight misfire and smoke, you know the glow plugs are working and the problem you have is that you didn't connect them.
Hook them up properly and all will be well

Re: No start please Help
If you have a socket the correct size for the nut (and can get it into the correct position) then you should be able to wedge the nut into the socket with a bit of paper towel, or some blu-tak as you prefer.

Re: No start please Help
If the small nut annoyingly goes too far back into the socket, place another one underneath it, to bring the required nut to the front. Hold both in place with a dob of grease.

Re: No start please Help
If there is insufficient clearance for a socket then a ratcheting ring spanner may do the job.
A bit of blue tack should hold the nut in place until it catches on the thread.
