really nice to see the contrast between it and the Moderns in the background; surprising to see how little it appears to have in common with them

I don't think they ever had anything in common with anything else!

I learned to drive in one and that was no fun, gearbox like a rice puddin' - the A35 I also learned in was much better.

A girlfriend had one too - unfortunately I wrote that one off.

And a bloke in the next flat to us had a Gordini. There was a bakers in the building that managed to splatter batter over it through an open window that pulled the paint off the roof and bonnet.

Always liked 8's & 10's - speshly Gordinis - but as I suspect the gear change was like a Dauphine (which you seem to confirm) I don't think I would've wanted one.

Both have four wheels, an engine and a steering wheel... That's about it

I had an extremely bad/sad experience with one of those, a Renault 10, T-boned it with my Wolseley 6/110 at sixty mph, the lady driver did a U-turn across my path, was ejected fifteen feet down the road and died as a result.
The car, though burst at the seams, remained on is wheels, engine ticking over and the radio playing.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

What a hideous experience but it speaks volumes for those little rear engined boxes (well they were 'til the Simca "mini-Corvair" came along) as a 60mph 6/110 almost defines "unstoppable force".

Glad you lived to tell the tale, sorry you have to live with the memory.

on a lighter note and with sympathies also Gibbo, I wonder if Rootes Group (was it Rootes initially?) tried one before development of the Chrysler Alpine/Solara. I never drove a R10, but that's a good description of the Alpine 'box.

That was just bad design (like many others: original Mini & column change MkIIII Z-cars spring to mind) whereas with the Renaults it was a side-effect of the self centring lever.

Oh yes, just noticed the 1/2-white roof! My recollection of panda cars was that they just had contrasting colour doors. In fact I'm sure there was one force which used Imps, they ordered equal numbers of 2 colours (fawn & yellow?) - & simply swapped the doors over.

...dug this out Van....Dumbartonshire Police :-D
http://www.imps4ever.info/misc/police.html
News and views : Loch Lomond Imps. - Autocar 1967, June 15

In the sixties the police motorcycles previously utilised by Dunbartonshire Police Force for escort duty were replaced by two standard Hillman Imp Police Cars, one was blue and the other was white in colour. The chief mechanic then decided to swap the respective doors, boot lids and engine covers of both cars to form a 'panda effect'. Both cars were used along the scenic A82 Loch Lomondshire road as basic escorts, using a leap frogging system of one imp going ahead of the other and stopping oncoming traffic where the roads were sufficiently narrowed. Their high profile appearance soon made them a tourist attraction at every rest stop with the subsequent nickname of Pinky and Perky attributed by police and public alike.
