Fob programming

Post by sctechsys »

Hi all

New to the forum.

I have a 2002 Picasso 2.0 HDI with one key, its the manual key with 4 way blade and blue transponder chip. This is all I have.

Looking on ebay I can grab one of these for £20 or so.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-SAXO ... rk:32:pf:0

is there a way to program it to the car? Obviously its only the fob, thats the only bit I need. I dont need another transponder coder as its already in my key.

Quick edit: my key has no buttons, it is the manual door lock type.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Kind Regards

It depends on what you want to do with it.

If you are not fussy about the remote locking and unlocking and put your transponder chip into the new fob with your original key then that's all you need to do. Just don't expect to use the buttons for remote locking / other functions.

If you want remote locking to work, you need to ensure the frequency, the circuitry and transmission protocols are identical, or you'll end up with a glorified key holder.

If you pop your VIN up here, I'll be able to determine the proper fob part number and frequency. But there are a lot of cheap fobs on the market and we've had countless posts where these don't work. If this Fob contains a transponder, you can always code it to your vehicle with a Lexia or as said previously, replace with your own transponder chip.

Certainly Ill grab my VIN for you.

My key is the key type with no buttons - So Its not like I could even transfer the internals into a key like my wifes, I just want the fob for remote locking unlocking and on my model of citroen I believe the fob was seperate to the key anyway.

Ill go grab my vin.

Ok, so there are 2 types of fob for this year / model of your Xsara Picasso. You have the following type:

Citroen Part Number: 6490L8
Transponder: ID46 - PCF7936
Frequency: 433 Mhz
Picasso Fob.PNG
Picasso fob B.PNG
Official Fob TypeSimilar Fob Types
Be careful - and do not simply look for the fob design as that means nothing these days due to aftermarket suppliers copying parts.

What is important is that for your Picasso, which was built in March 2002 it that part number 6490L8 is used, as after 2002 they changed the car's electronic architecture and a new type of design was used with a different part number (6554RF).

So although the Transmitter frequency and transponder chips may be the same, the circuitry used to send the signals for the remote locking and other functions may not.

Here's a link to a supplier:

Yes that is the one on the listing above. Ignore eBay sellers, they are often wrong. That is the correct part number and that looks to be a genuine one in Citroen packing with the correct part numbernI quoted.

You need a LEXIA to programme it to the car if you are going to use the new fob's transponder.

Citroen can do it for you - but will charge a fee. There are members here with Lexia kits that offer their services for members.

Have a look at the post here:

At the bottom is a link showing the list of members on a Google Map. Secondly, please bear in mind that not all members are active all the time, so there may be a delay in responding.

Good Luck.

so the buttons will only be used to lock/unlock... buttons would be external to the actual key, id have to have both on my keyring but thats not an issue... so how would one program just the fob?

It should be possible to synchronise the fob without Lexia, just by turning on the ignition with a coded key, and then pressing the lock (or unlock, not sure which) button on the fob.
