Letter from LV (current insurers) £267, down from £305 last year.

My experience this year was just the opposite with LV. Last year I paid them £650 for my C5. This year they quoted £888. And another £400 for my Saxo. I went onto GoCompare and found loads of cheaper quotes for the C5 but I like LV - mainly for the 4 months fully comp EU cover they give me. However on GoCompare they quoted £650 for the C5 so I rang LV and told them I would cancel my policy and take out a new one with them, through GoC. The girl immediately told me not to bother. She'd renew for me at the GoCompare price.

I also asked about renewal for the Saxo with my grandson added as a learner driver. They wouldn't give me a quote so I found another company on GoC with a premium of £325.

Had the renewal in today for my 406 hdi estate £192.00 I wasn't going to argue with that. Direct line that was.

Just got my renewal notice for the C5 Estate, Direct Line, last year I felt ripped off because they said with two cars I couldn't have the NCD on both, nobody else would cover it, got quoted £1500 by the local broker "best I can get."

After a long discussion with the Direct Line rep. I got it for £507, today's renewal £635

Straight online to GoCompare , quotes for comp all around £450 TPF&T £357.

Went online to Direct Line, Comp £435 TPF&T £337.

I was just about to give up and offer the car for sale when I read the renewal letter..

It just said "Automatic renewal on 12 October £634.04" plus the usual pile of additional twaddle, had them on the phone and settled for third party fire and theft at £347.20, the only other one to come near was Axa at £349 but with a higher excess.

Tried to squeeze them a bit more but they weren't having it. :(

I always used tho check the comparison sites but two years ago they were quoting silly money so I went to direct line which was not only cheaper but very efficient and didn't charge me when I changed cars - almost unheard of. So I have stuck with them this year even though the sites were offering it slightly cheaper and I will stay with them unless they get expensive. We are paying around £200 each for my 406 estate and her 206 estate. I don't know if it will go up next year when I'm 80 but I haven't been penalised on age so far.

It says something when you get your renewal with ~30% price increase, only to be quoted by them on a comparison site for less than I paid the previous year.

It’s the ‘hook’ and they ALL do it. It will be different for everyone as we are all different ages and have different addresses. I could say the complete opposite every time I rang direct in the past as they were ALL 30% to 1000% different! Not a typo either. I had a quote from one company for £5k for an XM! With the AA and near that for several others years ago.

Ended up going with privilege for £300 island stuck with them for several years until they inevitably started doubling and trebling prices later.

It has taught me to shop around and not to fall into the complacency trap!

Just an update on what I wrote above back in June. My grandson has a full licence now so I rang the company and asked if they needed to know. You bet they did! They've now put up the premium to £950 for the year. Even although it's my policy they did say that if he hasn't had a claim by the end of the year, they would credit him with a 1 year NCB.

I pay around €320 in Spain for fully comp (inc breakdown) on the Picasso.

Always thought insurance was very expensive here......but it appears UK insurance has risen a lot since I left in 2005.

The biggest factor seems to be where you live. The C15, living in London as it does, still costs about the same as the Eldo + 1 Cherokee, which are both registered in Devon.

Martin Lewis was on Radio 5 Live lunchtime-ish today "doing" car insurance.

One little product of their research was that there is apparently an optimum time for purchasing car insurance..

......20 days before your renewal date.

all to do with statistics with those leaving arranging insurance close to the renewal date being assessed as greater risk than those who arrange insurance 3 weeks before.

Much of the other stuff I had heard many times before, but that was a new one for me.

No, heard that before and experienced it. Leave it to a few days or a week before and your premiums shoot up. Mine got out of synch one year and when I went to get my insurance a bit quick, the original quote from 3 weeks ago had expired, so re-ran it and premiums up across the board by £70-£80. Which when you comsider the whole premium was originally £250, that’s a significant increase.

I decided they could swing for it and re ran the quote for a policy start date 10 days later and took the car off the road. Sure enough quote back to what it was originally! Just a rip off and totally unnecessary; just another way to grab some more cash when they think you have no option - WRONG!

I remember a job interview I attended many moons ago with a local IT company - the boss took great delight in showing me his retail invoicing software that had a % slider which he would adjust up or down dependant on how much he liked/disliked the customer. Pity I couldn't do similar to the wage he was offering. I'd be rich by now.
