Citroen C3 aircon fan problem

Post by haroon88 »

Good afternoon everyone,

I am new to this forum so first time posting something here.

I have a Citroen C3 2002 exclusive 1.4 model (petrol). Recently the car showed a problem with the aircon fan which didn't work at all speeds........ checked with the mechanic and told me that the resistor was faulty so had to replace it first. He also told that better to change the connector which connects the wires with the resistor so we did that as well. Then it used twice and then again it stopped working. I went back to the mechanic and he just fiddled with the fuse box under the steering wheel and it all lived up again. Today again after using twice just as a tester, it has stopped working again. I am already fed up with this problem since I did the fiddling myself but it never came back to life.

It seems to be the fuse box issue but what is causing this to happen? The fuse panel needs a replacement or just cleaning would be fine. Suggestions from you experts would save another trip to the mechanic and obviously my money as well.

Hoping for a quick reply....... Thank you.

Welcome as above.

I also can't offer any specific help - it generally is the resistor that fails but there must be an additional problem with yours.

If you post your VIN then someone with access to the relevant documentation will advise on what components are fitted to your C3 (and mask your VIN on receipt).

Post your VIN up as Steve says ^ then we can check system.

When the car is running at idle, put the fan on a speed that is not working, then gently move the ignition key back and forth in the ignition barrel. Does this cause the fan to come on and off?

Dear all, thank you very much for your replies.

@myglaren and @GiveMeABreak: here is the VIN - VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]********.

@GiveMeABreak: yes just now I have tried this as well by turning the aircon fan on at a level, shutting off the engine and restarting it. Same problem. :(

Ok, well first off, the car was built on 10th December 2004 not 2002 according to the factory build date :-D

Next - I would suggest that as you have paid for a problem to be fixed - your mechanic should fix it without charging you more money. Whatever he has done is not right and therefore he has not done his job properly in finding the fault.

If you look on the diagram below you can see the blower motor control unit. that I have marked in Green (you only have item 3, not item 2). It's possible that it's a cheap part and may be faulty - if in fact he has replaced the right part?
C3 Heater Module.PNG
C3 Heater Module B.PNG
This is the Blower Control Module, Part 6441L2Here are examples of a genuine replacement (Valeo) and a cheaper copy
As for the fuse it should be F15 in the BSI module in the car - that really shouldn't be the problem - it will either work or it won't - and as it controls all these functions - I doubt it is that or you wouldn't have these systems working either (not all will be fitted to your car):
  • Control Panel - Radiotelephone Transceiver
  • Heater Panel
  • Parking Assistance ECU
  • Audio System
  • Multifunction Screen
  • Air Inlet Flap Reduction Motor
  • Radio Amplifier Relay
In the following extract from the wiring diagram (Click to Zoom)

Thank you very much for a detailed reply.

I just knew that this model has started in 2002 so I refer it like that :-) but you are right too.

The heater resistor was not cheap. Paid around 75€ for it (I am in Italy) so I don’t think it is cheap material or faulty but I have warranty as well for it.

The wiring thing is something that I doubt as since he did change the wiring harness of the resistor module.

Just a clarification, since my car has digital climate control unit, if F15 Fuse is blown or faulty, would the display show the temperature and fan level etc. ???

Also the mechanic told me that the fuse panel (where the fuse F15 is inserted) under the steering wheel probably needs a replacement or the climate control unit might be causing the problem. Any idea?

That looks the same as mine in the C5 - I've had three of them, the first from the dealer was >£100, the second £20 from eBay and the current one £12 from eBay (China)
The last one has been the best but I think that when it is running full tilt that the cooling is insufficient and burns the transistors (and the wiring on one occasion, plus my hand when I picked it up).
Now we never let it run on max for more than a couple of minutes in very cold weather.

Ok so that fuse controls the heater panel and the other items I listed -so it can't be the fuse because the heater panel wouldn't have a display and nor would any of the other items work like the radio.

The digital heater control panel does send the commands to the blower control module and from there to the blower motor. It is quite unusual for the digital control panel itself to go - but it is not unheard of.

What happens on the climate display when you select different speeds? Do you get a variation of speed when you press the blower fan speed control in increments? Or do you only get full speed or nothing?

I would be inclined to have it read with a Lexia first, to see what the fault code is if there are any. Replacing parts without the cause may be more expensive and unnecessary.

It it is an issue with the wiring then I would carefully check that all the connectors are secure in the BSI and also behind the climate panel / radio. Has the radio head unit been replaced or been taken out for anything?

You've been quite lucky there Steve! :-D I know it can be a bit of a lottery though in some cases with some of the parts from our friends in the Far East.

When I press the fan speed button, it works normally in terms of displaying the incremental speed indicator of the fan blades.

I bought this car used and my radio was beeping whenever I switched it on. The mechanic has resolved the beeping issue and said that this was due to the fact that it is not the original radio which came with the car. So answering your question, the radio head unit was replaced.

The beeping happens when the Head unit is not coded to the vehicle properly.
I'm now wondering if any of the other parameters have been changed ...

So in that case - knowing how sensitive those wires are at the back of the head unit and the climate control panel, I would certainly make sure they are all tight and secure. To confirm then - you are getting the lighting up of the segments of the blower motor on the panel, but no fan at any speed?

I haven't had any problems with stuff sourced in the Orient.

I did however buy a set of roof bars yesterday from Sunderland that don't fit :(
Sunderland is no place to be on a Saturday afternoon.
