Re: Xantia 2.0hdi power steering pump

Unread post by bill hughes »

Hi all
the belt that drives the alternator and hydraulic pump shredded and some bits got wedged in the gap of the pump pulley wheel which is now leaking between the gap, I have an O ring kit that I got from Plaeides for another job on the pump and I am wondering if its oil seal O ring that is leaking, and what problems I might have in replacing it or how to go about it even, any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks Bill

One issue with this job is that the pulley is a tight press fit on the shaft, and a hydraulic press is probably required to remove and refit it.

You should consider sending the pump to Plaeides for refurbishment unless you have access to a very good workshop.

Thanks for your replies but it seems odd that a few strands of belt getting between the pulley and the main body of the pump should cause a leak if it is such a tight fit, i'm a bit baffled, I also presume that it cant be done in situ.

You need to (if you have not already) clean up the pump and determine exactly where the leak is. My advice above was based on an assumption that you had determined that the shaft seal is leaking, but I am not sure that is the case.

Xantia V6
thanks for replying, you have confirmed what I had suspected that there is a shaft seal, I have cleaned it all and dried it with compressed air and found that oil is collecting in the bottom of the pulley so presume its from the shaft seal, problem is I live in France and nothing gets repaired just a new pump at 1100 euros, I know Plaeides are the answer but its getting it to them that is the problem.

Shipping of a parcel should not be too difficult or expensive, I just entered some guessed numbers into https://parcelbroker.co.uk/quote/service.php and the cheapest price was £16 (one way).

You could try to source a second hand pump, as they are fairly readily available in France, but the problem is to ensure that you get the correct variant, as there are several, and most vendors don't have a clue.

Thanks xantia V6 I have contacted Plaeides and they say the pump has to be stripped down to access this seal probably not a job for me, so I am getting a re-con one from them, they quoted about £20 postage etc. many thanks for your help

Hi xantia V6 its me again, I am doing ok so far but have been told by Citroen's that the car with my vin number could have either one of 2 a/c compressors and the belts have different part numbers do you happen to know where the a/c compressor is located and whats the best way to access it for (hopefully) a manufacturers name, thanks once again

The A/C compressor is bolted to the front face of the engine sump, but from memory can be seen from above or below with that engine.

Given that belts are cheap, maybe you should buy one of each?

Also check that the tensioner pulley is running in the right alignment.

Try Mister Auto.fr (owned by PSA) - new power steering pumps there for Xantia from approx €170, a much more sensible price.

Not saying that it is a bad idea, but it is easy to order the wrong part, there are 4 or 5 different pulley diameters, not to mention 2 outlet and 3 outlet pumps. A/C and non-AC engines also have different hydraulic pumps I think.

If you post your VIN, we may be able to identify the original part number, some of the replacements are also cross referenced to that (but some are not).

Thanks again xantia V6 as you pointed out mister auto is ok for some bits but he lists many pumps having been given all the car details, I have located the a/c compressor and taken a number off of it, also Pladiedes suggested buying the 2 belts which I will do if I cant get any further information off the compressor when I remove the fibre sump guard.
