In September 2016 when the google streetview camera passed it was here! It is a grade II listed building so would be surprised if anyone has moved it.

Chatting with the owner of a local pub, this turned out to be the first new van they bought in 1958. No main dealer...the local garage down the road supplied it new, and the fascinating fact.....the front passenger seat came as an optional extra!

I remember them well from a few years later. I particularly remember a ride in the back of one with the accumulated junk and aroma of spare tyre and petrol, late at night through Newcastle Town Centre to be dropped off at Marlborough bus station for the hideous hour long journey back home in a smoky Northern Bus.

Do have a flick through this brochure...its a piece of art and literature in its own right just beautiful.....

'Never needs repairs'.
That would be an interesting one to try and get past the ASA these days!
Does make you wonder what the purpose of the complete spare parts service might be.

I remember the bubble cars well, there was a Messerschmitt in Lyme Regis when we first came down here - but that was 48 years ago, it was still in use for a few years after that though. I friend of ours had one when we lived in Sevenoaks, went out one icy night and came down a hill on the roof, I think that was an Isetta.

When did the chromium hub cap turn into a wheel trim.

The P on this one represents Plaxton.
wheel trim or hub cap that is the question.

These used to thunder up and down the hill at the end of our street on their way to and from the Cement Works in Weardale.

The Fodens always had a nice line in chromium hub caps

Thinking back to one of the most popular cars of the period, the ubiquitous Ford Escort, the Mk3's had Chrome Hubcaps https://mathewsons.co.uk/vehicle-auctio ... -1600-ghia
(I always really liked those wheels and the base model Steelies with the round holes suited it really well too)

....but, by the time the Mk4 came along, it was all wheeltrims

...similarly, the now rare early 'Jelly Mould' Sierra from a 'Y' plate was all plastic wheeltrims

perhaps around the early 1980's?

An aside as previously mentioned on other threads: personally, I loathe the current fashion for fancy grey wheels on otherwise drab-ly styled moderns. I eyeballed a recent Mustang just today, in a deep red metallic (very similar to the 405 Le Mans colour), it could've looked lovely with simple wheels in a bright colour to 'lift' the huge expanses of metal, but instead it had fussy grey wheels; which just made the rather unadventurous interpretation of the original styling look drab and a bit like it should've been owned by a spotty teenager.

NB: if anyone's wondering, there will be updates coming in the next few days on my welding project documented elsewhere, but I'm having a few days off from it at the mo.

My first car in 1956, Ford Prefect 1939. Behind my mother and the wall she built!

1172cc side valve engine, rod brakes, transverse springs, no heater because no water pump thermo syphon cooling, 6 volt electrics, dreadful car although I thought it was the bees knees at the time. My second car a 1950 Hillman minx was like a rolls royce in comparison.

My first car was slightly older. It was a 1937 Singer Bantam. Unlike other small saloons of that time, the engine had a chain-driven overhead camshaft. Again it had no water pump; just relying on a huge radiator.

That was a modern engine for the time, except for the lack of a water pump. Most popular cars were side valve, I think the first mass production car that was OHV was the Austin A40 Devon which I believe came out in 1948 with the renowned 'B' series engine. The Morris Minor didn't go OHV until I think 1952 - or was that the Oxford?

They were the days when all the street came out to see when you bought a new car. 8-)

that Prefect looks to be in really nice condition for a 17 year old, at the time. I guess your Father might've been away on National Service hence your Mum building the wall?

My first car was a 1973 Vauxhall Viva 1256cc HC, in Starfire Green (funny the things we remember) in 1987. It should've put me off Vauxhall's, but it was another Viva and a Chevette later that I vowed never to touch the brand again with the proverbial or to lay spanners on a car, after a number of disastrous efforts.

It was replaced with a rotten and underpowered brown 1.4 Chrysler Alpine and later, one of my favourite cars, a Mitsubishi Celeste.

I recently worked out that my current car is by far the oldest I've ever owned.

I recall working on a pre-war Morris Minor with OHV push rod and another with OHC, I can't find any reference to the OHV engine but the OHC is well documented, a Wolseley engine originally.
