Thank you Marc and Wurliycorner.

Difficult to be sure but the stick to the ear says the noise may be coming from the arrowed part in the image.

Looks to be part of the manifold ?

I wonder if there are any flaps or such like in there ?

Time to have another look at the Haynes manual : )

When I recently had my third  steering rack fitted, and was having a look when we were initially diagnosing it, there was a part of the heat shield (a small square piece) that was just flopping about! That was the cause of the noise I had been hearing for the past 2 years intermittently whilst driving - but mostly going up hill. I had several techs go out with me and they couldn't identify it - so it had no doubt worked loose after not being fitted back properly by the dealer when rack number 2 was being fitted!

So my indy garage who did the job properly attached it and now peace and quiet. So if you have the under engine protection cover off Spiff, I would certainly wiggle any plates at the back of the manifold area going down as once the engine is started and the vibration kicks in - it may be more obvious (just make sure you have the car independently supported first if going under it and don't rely on the suspension alone).

That was my issue and hopefully it will be yours too.

Thank you for that Marc,

We have owned the car for 12 months, the noise was there when we purchased it.

It was also mentioned as a noisy cat on a service document before the last owner had it.

The garage that fitted the cam belt for me last week said it was the cat.

I think this miss interpretation occurred, because there was also a noise like dried peas rattling in a can that was definitely the cat, it produced it if you hit it.

That noise has now gone, but little consolation as it is the rattle that is so annoying.

It resonates at certain frequencies as the engine speed varies.

I had the bottom cover off today, but did not locate the steering rack.

I tried a long piece of wood against all the shields I could see to no avail.

Is it possible for you to point the offending square piece somehow in a drawing or picture, I realise I am asking a lot : )

There was nothing like that square that I spotted today.

Haynes manuals are useful, but it is a bit like spot where this image was taken : )

UPDATE

i located these images for my car, not sure where the fisrt one is.

I think the second is refering to the suspention

Spiff, if you look in my last but one post, with the 3 diagrams in a table, you’ll see that the first one concerns all the heat shield components. That’s what is showing for your car, but remember I have a MK III X7 C5, so it has a few more heat shield components than your car it would seem. I just mentioned it as worth checking, but maybe it is rattling now where you have had to modify the replacement to fit?

Thank you Marc,

That is fine I understand.

A new pipe joiner is on its way, I once had an exhaust system on a M1 Jaguar ( cost £30 the car that is ) pull off front to back when a clamp caught on low ground.

Strangle enough it was in Cornwall, it happened on rough ground at Rinsey many years ago on holiday down here.

Fortunately I had tools and a set of ramps in the back of the car : )

This clamp will have more room to turn the bolts away from the ground.

If and when I find the rattle I will post.

Many thanks for your help.

The first image has the gear shift linkages - so it's probably somewhere over the sub-frame behind the engine.
