Can't beat the "Daily Post" for a bit of Welsh news.
Porthmadog today recorded the highest temperature so far this year in the UK - a scorching 32.6C.

At 1.54pm the North Wales seaside town was the hottest place in the UK with the mercury reaching the highest anywhere since January 1, pushing above 90 Fahrenheit.

And Porthmadog’s temperatures soared above exotic resorts and tourist destinations across the world including Palma in Majorca, Las Palmas in Gran Canaria and Valetta in Malta, where the temperatures were about 27C this afternoon.

It was also hotter than Moscow in Russia where the World Cup is being held which was about 26C, Athens in Greece at 28C and on a par with Cairo at 31C
Yes, it was raining when we visited it on our North Wales Holiday!

Oh and for those who are not sure exactly where Porthmadog is....its 17.1 miles from the nearest AA Box in situ on UK roads at Boduan :-D

If the "heatwave" is still on by all means take a thermometer with you when you visit to record the hottest AA box in the UK!

Wales......It is the land of "Great Little Trains" of course.

....but this photo is from Dublin on St Patrick's Day 1974......nice from a nostalgia point of view the "SeaLink" brand, the yellow Bedford Lorry, and the little loco steaming away.

and the Vale of Rheidol railway as well as being the AA Box spotters dream as it chugs its way from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge has this tempting offer and a decent marketing phrase...

A absolute bargain for a fiver. I drove a similar little loco at Amberley Chalk Pits museum - a thoroughly good day :)

Certainly not Neil, toy trains maybe, but not a train in sight from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth, which is what annoys me intensely about the tree-hugging greens living in the cities preaching to all of us to get on the trains and buses. They ought to try living up here without a car!

This strays a bit into Pickled Egg library territory (limited appeal but interesting to those who find it interesting :-D ), but it is a record of the former line in 1964 from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth, and its in colour and there are plenty of chuffing engines, stations and history.
https://vimeo.com/103641050
The punchline when you get to the end of the journey....
"We arrive in Aberystwyth Platform number 4. The average journey time from Carmarthen took two and a half to three hours for the 56 mile trip"
Talks and feasibility studies of a re-opening but no conclusion that I have found. At least the consultants will have trousered £300,000 even if political will/ brexit or whatever scuppers ambitions.

I recall as kids we were taken to a place called Towyn, near Rhyl for a weeks holiday where we stayed in a bungalow alongside a railway line, it ran parallel to the sea wall.
We went out the front door across the line and over the sea wall into the sea, I think the next place along the line was Abergele, we walked to there along the sea wall.

Well it was tempting being a mere 43 miles away but a trip from our Herefordshire holiday HQ to Pontarfynach was a bridge too far.

No it is unlikely that any of our 2 outstanding AA Boxes in Wales will be claimed this summer by holidaymakers from Northumberland. No its going to have to be left to the fine Welsh stock of FCF members, or holidaymakers from other parts.

I hope we haven't run out of What do you know about Wales snippets.....still plenty to go to catch up with Norfolk!

Remember Pontarfynach and Boduan are the most interesting places in Wales to take your french car, your camera and, if you have one, your "selfie stick" to. :-D

What do I know about Wales?

This Welsh Beauty was sold for £9,240 at Brightwells Leominster today. Its a 1969 Gilbern Genie.
Built at Llantwit Fardre. If you havent heard of Llantwit Fardre its a mere 87.7 miles from the AA Box at Devils Bridge.

I know nothing about Wales, apart from its between England and the Irish sea! I have never been to Wales, its about the only part of the mainland UK I have never been. I need to rectify that. And bet your boots if im going to drive 500 miles or so to get there I will find the AA boxes lol

I like Countryfile.....and today’s special. Perfect for this thread.

If ever we darken the doors of Haverfordwest, it would be nice to come across the horse box selling Welsh Cakes as featured on the program.

.
https://www.facebook.com/mamguwelshcakes/

Now they did explain the name of the business on the program. MamGu..... but I hope some of our Welsh members may enlighten me :)

Major omission of the 2 AA boxes from the program though :!:

Thanks Marc.

Looks like the main cafe is in Haverfordwest (edit:subsequently found out its in Solva a village on the Pembrokeshire Coast) but they took the horsebox down the coast somewhere for the filming. Any ideas where it is?
