That is correct - it is the hangover from the RHD / LHD conversion and that is where the brake switch is located as you can see from the diagram (part 10).

Just to report a successful outcome.
The relay was where it was reported to be and exactly as shown in the pics in this thread ie right up behind the glove box and was a 5 pin 96 202 209 80 Cartier type. It was found and replaced by an auto electrician and all is well now. My problem is that I don't bend like I used to and couldn't for the life of me find it.

I feel your pain - literally!

Great news though.

Glad you got it sorted!
It's interesting how the contacts in the relay fail despite the coil working correctly.

Is there any carpet/plastic trim to remove to get at it? Or is it 'exposed', albeit a pig to find?! I'm going to have to sort mine out, its only working around 20% of the time, which is really, really winding me up now!

Just the trim under the glove box - two 90 degree twist clips. Ignore the first relay you find which will probably be a big green one. Apparently it's right up behind the glove box on lhs, but, as I said, I couldn't contort enough to see it. And being black any way, it surely must be difficult to spot. If it's any consolation the relay was only £7.50 and the auto-electrician charged £63 all in, which is probably less than a physiotherapist would charge to put your back right when you try it yourself.....

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to get down there at the weekend, bike-prang related aches and pains permitting!

Hello - I'm new and had the same problem. Managed to fix it -- it was indeed the relay -- couldn't have traced it without this forum, so many thanks. It took me 4 hours to change though, as on my car the relay holder faces up and is totally inaccessible. Had to remove the glovebox (massive job) and even then it was a case of reaching fingers over the top of the holder, bending a clip away then eventually easing the relay out. If I could have released the holder from its mount it wouldl have been a lot easier, and may not have needed the glove box out, but I couldn't see how it released even with torch and mirror. I uploaded photo of relay holder. Relay plugs into top of the black holder, (behind the blue one) and is held in by a clip on top which has to be pushed sideways. Good luck.

Thanks for the pic. I was lucky in that I was somehow able to dislodge the relay holder so I could rotate the assembly to pull the relay out.

There isn't much info on this fix so I hope that this thread will continue to help people with the same issue.

Glad that someone else has managed to find, remove and replace this relay, which, to me, had attained almost mythical status. No way could I find it. I can console myself with the fact that the auto electrician that did the job for me in the end was half my age and presumably twice as pliable when it came to the contortions involved in replacing it. He did it without removing the glovebox and several months on all is working well.

^ Yeah, if it wasn't for the fact that the coil was still working in the relay allowing me locate it by sound and also by touch then I would have given up and just removed the interlock solenoid!

Hi
Re-opening an old thread I know but I have the same interlock problem. I have located the relay but I can't see any way of removing it without major dismantling. As previously stated the relay holder can only be seen from the bottom. I have tried to manipulate it free using a fair amount of force but not sure in which direction it needs the force applying. I don't want to break anything. I'm very reluctant to take it to a dealer for what should be such a simple job. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
TIA

Thanks Marc
I have read that thread religiously & have no problem with accessing the solenoid. It's the relay behind the glovebox that I can't work out how to remove. I can see it, I can feel it, I just can't figure out how to remove it. I know it's possible just don't know how.
The other option would be to modify the solenoid which is not desirable but looks to be an easier alternative. It looks as though it should be easy to remove the 4 screws holding the turret arrangement with the gear lever guide. The release assembly should be easy to disable by the looks of it. The car has to go for an MOT imminently & I don't want them to decline to test it because they can't get the gear lever out of Park. It can take a couple of minutes to release it sometimes.
Thanks again
Adrian
