It is possible to just about see the condition of the pinion shaft by shining a torch through the wheel on driver's side wheel arch and hunting around to find it, but you get a much clearer view by inspecting it via the driver's footwell - about a half hour job (including cup of tea) and needing only a 10mm socket and a 13mm socket or ratchet spanner.
I'm not equipped to self-inspect for time being, but did get a set of photos taken through the wheel, and got a dealership time for first thing tomorrow morning. Topics to cover:
