Are Gates kits of good quality ?

Post by spiff »

Good morning from a sunny Mullion Cove Cornwal.

Some learned advice if you would be so kind : )

Are Gates kits of good quality ?

Gates Drive Belt Set K016PK1708
Gates Timing Belt Kit K015528XS

I recently replaced the drive belt but it has shredded again, so I think the pulleys must require replacing as they were a bit suspect : )

I may as well do the timing belt at the same time as no mention of a second replacement at 159000 miles : )

They have a solid reputation and they claim that they provide belts as original equipment to several manufacturers.

Thank you for the reply, the two were £100 not bad.

I have requested the price for the water pump as well, as it was not part of the cam belt kit.

That is great to hear : )

I have just ordered the two, the timing kit to include the water pump.

Timing Belt & Water Pump Kit KP15528XS Gates Set WP0080 T43022 T41235 5528XS.

Drive Belt Set K016PK1708 Gates Kit T38206 T38055 6PK1708 Quality Replacement.

There was a discount for two, which brings the total cost including delivery to £128.35.

Not sure if the timing kit included alignment pins, but I should be able to make some thing up : )

Now to find a You Tube video on how to : )

Timing pins are not included in the kit. It's possible to buy timing kits but usually 6mm drill bits, lengths of bent 6mm rod and 8mm bolts do the job.

Just be aware there are 2 variations of the timing setup on this engine, the earlier version has 4 smaller bolts holding the crank pulley on & the later one has just a big centre bolt holding the pulley on. The later one has a floating crankshaft sprocket with no woodruff key & needs a very specifically shaped timing pin for the flywheel. Do not remove the crank pulley without first pinning the flywheel or it will be a nightmare to set back up.
The earlier one just uses a round rod in the crank pulley so a suitable drill bit can be used.

The flywheel pin im talking about is the top one in the pic below

Good morning thank you for the warning.

I did see that on a video, but it did not mention that there was an earlier version.

Is there a way apart from removing the cover, that I or any of you kind gentlemen can identify which engine I have from the Engine Number LH690831391 or Engine Code EW10J4 ?

At the moment Alanna and I are in the middle of digging holes in very rocky Cornish ground and cementing in fence posts : )

Just look at the crank pulley, if it has just a single bolt its the later one. If it has a middle bolt with 4 smaller outer bolts its the early one.

EW10J4 is the engine type Spiff. It will be one of the bottom 2 - check your engine VIN plate for the exact one.

The inside wheel arches are not off at the moment.

Looking down from inside the engine compartment with a small mirror on a telescopic handle, there is a pulley at the bottom with groves for the alternator / steering pump / air con drive belt.

It has four small bolts and a larger one in the centre.

Is there also behind it the cam belt drive pulley ?

So is this the one being referred to ?

If it is the earlier version engine then from your posts I can use drills to lock the pulleys.

Other wise it will be necessary to order a proper locking kit.

I not sure where to look for the engine VIN Mark, I have the car vin, but now believe from your post that this is another vin ?

UPDATE

I can see now that the pulley is the four blot one by consulting the Manual and in my picture you can see the small mirrow showing the pulley : )

So I have the four bolt pulley and can lock it with drills is that correct ?

Yes, you can lock it at the crank pulley.

If it was the single bolt the crank locks at the flywheel instead.

Gates timing belt kits are in my opinion good. Gates serpentine belts however are a different matter. They used to be one of the best. I have been told by others of problems with them and that they will no longer fit them. I have had one perish and start to crack within a short time.
However your problem would appear to me, to have been caused by a problem with a pulley or idler.

I have a had a gates timing kit fail before on me.

When the rep turned up he was blindly adamant i hadn't fitted a timing kit even though i had and the rep from the factors where i bought it from was stood there with a invoice to prove it.

I moved onto dayco, since citroen and pug fitted them new, one of the reps from a different factors told me the bearings were of low quality, i dismissed this but looked at kit i was about to fit and couldn't see any numbers/letter or makers name (at the time, may of changed now).

I only fit either o.e kits now, from the main dealer or a brand called INA, who incidentally made all the bearings for the other brands, they apparently pulled out of supplying to the other brands and started to produce belts as well. Hence dayco having cheaper bearings in.

Also contitech seems very good kits still.

Boy it is warm today, 20.2 ourside and 26.7 inside : o

Thank you all for your advice, I have now received the timing kit, the other belt kit should arrive Tuesday or Wednesday.

I had ordered before your post Kerek85, so could not factor in your advice., but thank you for taking the time to post it : )

I called at our local motor repairer in Mullion today to get a price for them to do the job.

They have done C5s before, a price should arrive later today.

I know I can do it, but it is whether I want the stress involved.

We do most jobs ourselves, over the last few days we have dug the holes, cemented in fence posts and built a 6 ft fence.

Sorted the fault and fitted a new graphics card to one of our computers.

Installed a new shower and made some replacement parts for a vintage film projector : )

How ever I have noticed that even some of the forum members opt to let a garage fit timing belts.

The job on the old Ford Cortina MK2 was very easy, but the space is so limited on transverse engines.

Plus as it is an interference engine, a mistake could badly damage the engine.

We will see how much they want to do the job : 0
