If there were points available for spots It’s quite possible I would be in the lead, but realistically there’s no chance of me getting any more. Unless,,,,,,,would I get bonus points for having one of these?

Davie, would you believe it your travelling companion for the North Coast 500 also has an AA/RAC key in his posession. What are the chances of that happening?

I know it looks as if it's had a lot of use, but is hasn't . . . honest . . .

(Did, though do a 27-year run with the RAC, but that's what happens when you run a lot of Rovers and BL stuff...)

The AA and RAC's keys fitted each other's boxes, IIRC.

Yesterday I noticed #446 in a garden in Grantham, I could not read the 'location' boards from the road I also didn't have a camera with me.

This is not included in the 'wanted' list, was this one in this garden when last reported?

Excellent spot Maurice.

The 19 on the original list are boxes which are still in their original Roadside Locations, some of which have been listed.

There are others which have been moved into museums, and the odd one privately purchased.

Box Number 446 Would have the Location Board Handley and a telephone number of Tattenhall 271, and was originally situated on the Whitchurch - Chester A.41 / 7 miles south of Chester.

If its the original Box it has had a bit of a journey, and no doubt a story behind that journey.

If you give some more precise details of where it was you can often pick them up on google street view. I don't mind in the least doing a bit of a search in fact I enjoy it (sad really I suppose!). So if you have a bit more detail I'll try and find it.

Just been reasonably close to Grantham had a little mini holiday in Lincoln just this week.

Bingo Maurice!

Not Google Street View but Geograph, which if you haven't come across before has images submitted by the general public for every 1km grid square in the united Kingdom. Its an absolutely tremendous resource.

As of this photo in 2008 it was located in grid square TF0645 near to Sleaford Lincolnshire. There has to be no co-incidence here.....I noticed from the map of the location that Sleaford has a "Handley Monument". The box has a location board with "Handley" on it (i.e. Handley in Cheshire). Must be part of the story of why it has ended up where it is.

THAT'S IT!!!!!

Sorry Neil - Castle Causeway, Sleaford, not Grantham (it's an age thing).

I'd remember seeing this post and being an AA member since 1968 got all excited.
Just received a '50th Anniversary Atlas' from the AA, anybody else got one of these?

Maurice-Take a picture of the front cover and post it in "the Pickled Egg Library" the FCF's receptacle for all things literary of interest, or in the stuff I usually post there...marginal interest! :-D ...Not many will have stayed with the AA 50 years...they get a bit annoying at renewal time with their inflated "renewal" first gambit.

A bit of interest which you may/may not be aware of, the old AA Round Village Signs of which there are only about 65 still in situ on the sides of buildings by the roadside, have a thread on the FCF here

I know what you mean about the renewal, the cost can jump up if you don't keep an eye on it.
One issue I had was when I bought a new car I got free breakdown cover so the AA cover was for the 'special, hobby, fun,' car only doing around 2500 miles pa.
I have had AA membership that covered only this car with the reg number on the AA card at a much reduced cost.

In those 50 years I have used them very spasmodically but there have been a number of times when they're really saved the day - CX Safari with a massive LHM leak so no brakes, steering or suspension, the car was almost on the ground, the AA guy nearly s**t himself but it was relayed 20+ miles to a Citroen indy.
I've even called um out to change a wheel when I had a front blowout on an XM and because I had a bad back couldn't get the spare from under the rear of the car.

Picked up my new car at the weekend from Kendal, south of the Lakes, which allowed a diversion via Dunmail Raise (under the pretext of climbing Helvellyn!), so only 4 left now!

Box in good condition and well kept.

Dark Grey 3008 is my new one. Photo bomb of Ioniq just collateral damage - it was a Hybrid, so doesn't qualify for the electric cars thread!

Excellent Richard!. Helm Crag above the box is a less strenuous than Helvellyn, but great views all the same.

Will update the list later and see if we can get some stirrings from Wales and Devon, and maybe even Jersey which has always been odds on to be the last to be spotted :-D

Another one bites the dust! There is an organisation I am in has an annual meet in Jersey, I have missed this years one but possibly next year I shall have to go for a few days, hire a car, and enjoy some sightseeing! It could work. I wouldnt photograph a hire car beside it though, it would be liable to be something crap like a Hyundai or even worse a corsa or fiesta
