As I mentioned in another thread, I don't believe Nissan actually make cars any more.
Every single Nissan I've seen in recent times has been a Renault in a frumpy dress.
So owners looking for Japanese reliability have been getting French quality control, French designed electrics and mechanicals, all dressed up in an ugly body. On the up side, they drive very nicely indeed, when they're working. Clio/Micra is a genuinely nice car to drive, compared to K9, which lived up to its name admirably, being both wayward and extremely loyal!

They're very much Nissan designs that are on sale in the UK (I'd like to see Renault build anything as accomplished as the GTR!)
And as for French build quality? Have to beg to differ there I'm afraid... Very much Jap build quality comes out of Nissan factories from what I hear/see.
Similar parallel Mazda - might be a lot of Ford design in their European range these days, but the Mazda's built in Mazda factories are significantly better built.
There was a case study while I was at University where Mazda started building a car based on the Fiesta, using the exact same gearbox. Fiesta boxes were suffering from premature failure (I understand the same has been true on one of the recent Focus models incidentally). Mazda's didn't, so they investigated why. Ford assumed that Mazda had re-engineered the gearbox, but they found they hadn't - they were building to exact same design and exact same design tolerances... The difference was that the mean dims of Mazda's 'as built' components was much closer to the nominal, whereas the Ford stuff was within tolerance but all over the place. Just better build quality control.

Somewhat ironic as Ford were the first to introduce quality control to allow for volume manufacturing - using the advice of Swedish engineer Carl Edvard Johansson.*
The Swedish Wiki entry is much more exhaustive and interesting.
And the American William Edwards Deming brought TQM to the Japanese.

There's a big plant in luton making Renault Traffics as Vivaro's..... same van can be bought as Nissan's & Fiats
I think the last Vauxhall design was the Bedford CF which got badged as an Opel, finshed 1986 ish ?

Actually, I think the CF was a Bedford badged Opel Blitz, a model (name) that probably pre-dated the CA. In the same way as the all new Transit (to replace the 400E - originally a Thames) was just the latest version of the well established Koln model.

Tonight's episode of Top Gear has a short feature on the new Renault Alpine. It would have been a longer feature but the car caught fire and completely burnt out during filming. Wonder if it was a wiring fault ?

Great looking car, but not in any way as accomplished as the GTr. The Alpina is a very basic car (not saying that makes it not good in its own right - but it is for a very different market).
