I'm sure they will :) Good for them too...

They have form in that they were in early on the banning of energy drinks (evil bloody things) to kids. An excellent move that was soon followed by virtually all...

If the same happens with pop/booze bottles and cans then that will be truly excellent...

The next serious thing to tackle is one-use almost non-recyclable coffee cups and takeaway packaging...

This is a company that I used to have a few shares in Jim, the trouble is that it's always jam tomorrow and I alongside a lot of other shareholders lost a lot of money.

The recycling schemes don't seem to be able to distinguish between regular oil based plastics and compostable plant based, they just want to ban them all so the advantages are lost and of course there is additional cost of production until the stuff goes mainstream.

One day maybe!

Gibbo, it just goes to show just how much devil is in the detail..

I wonder what the scope for replacing the vast majority of single-use oil-based plastic items with bio-degradable plant-based plastics? A good move if it could be done but is there some areas where such plastics are not suitable or applicable?

There don't seem to be many applications that can't use some bio products Jim, the problem has always been the small additional cost and persuading producers to adopt them when they can continue with oil based plastics without penalty.

This company has made some progress in the USA with coffee filters and that seems to be going well, they have also trialled food trays, pots for pills and the like and many other items.

It would appear some 'encouragement' is needed to adopt them then...

One of the often overlooked reasons why some materials aren't recycled is that they can't easily be picked out on the recycling conveyor belts in the recycling plants. For a long time black plastic food trays from supermarket 'ready meals' weren't widely recycled as the optical sensors couldn't determine what they were so they went to landfill. Thankfully, more and more recycling plants now have the technology to pick them out.
Some of the more responsible recycling plant operators offer guided tours of their facilities - well worth a look, especially if things like ballistic separators, eddy currents, magnets, and optical sorters float your boat

Eddy Current... Knew him well. A bit of a looser  He use to give Milli Henry a terrible time and regularly stole her Joules before riding off on his Mega Cycle...

He was eventually ran to ground and imprisoned in a Faraday Cage...

I thought it was only Torbay that wouldn't recycle black plastic trays - despite them clearly being marked as recyclable AND, their sorting is done manually at the kerbside. B-t-w, they do accept take-away coffee cups as card - so why does it seem to be such a problem for everyone else? I mean that idiot Mayor of London is talking about introducing mandatory specialised recycling facilities.

Greenwich, on the other hand, insisted yoghurt pots couldn't be recycled - despite the plastic one being made of the same material as margerine tubs - which could! A curious case of the contents being the deciding factor.

I have long understood that all plastic car components are required to be recyclable - never understood why that only applies to car components!

Given that photodegradable & biodegradable plastic bags have been available for years, why not ban all others - or, at least their manufacture & sale. Isn't it the Phillipines that have gone as far as making possession of a plastic bag an offence?

Not LHM but the result of a really pretty awesome week and an especially good day yesterday spent in the company of my youngest daughter who I don't see nearly enough as she lives in London...

Public perception plays a big part in what type and colour of plastic are used in food packaging. The black food trays used in 'ready meals' is a good example. Although it would be perfectly acceptable to package them in any colour of tray to make recycling easier, tests always showed that the public perceived food looked better in black trays and would be put off buying them in other coloured trays.
As the saying goes : People are intelligent, but public are stupid. #-o

The problem I see with plastic recycling is the coding, If they'd forget the HDPE, PVC, et-al and just have a simple numbering system at manufacture "Items numbered 1 to 5 go in the green bin, items 5 to 8 in the black bin." the public would be quite capable of sorting it before dumping it out.

There was such a system with a triangle arrow icon I think but it seems to have fallen out of use.

I had quite a struggle to get from the local council their rule for 'milk containers' i.e. the two litre ones etc. because they refer to 'milk bottles' and didn't have them on their list of acceptable items.

Also at the tip this week I emptied a few old plastic 5 litre oil containers into the waste oil tank, at the side of the tank there's a notice saying put your empty containers in here to go to the non-recyclable skip, surely that can't be right.

There aren't really UK wide standards for what is and isn't considered recyclable. Pictures like this with the circle and heart emblem are the only standardised thing about recycling !!:

To take Gibbo's point above - what one council would consider as a 'Type 7 plastic', another council would consider it a 'Type 4', mainly due that council's (or council contractor's) agreements they had in place with the broker that bought the recyclate off of them.

As for the oil containers - they would be considered contaminated waste due to residual oil content so would need to go into 'General Waste'.
