The PITA Electrical Connector

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Exhibit A....This example is a Renault Clio under seat seat-belt pretensioner link. It has a stupid red plastic bit but I havent yet worked out how to pull the connector apart. Haven't worked out the secret combination of what to what to lift up/press down/slide out or whatever.

There are never any instructions and I have failed the initiative test!!!!

Anyone know how to do it? Happy to use this thread to gather other annoying electrical connectors, with an occasional how to undo them :-D

That could work-smash it up or cut it off and join the connecting wires. The red plastic thing is already in two bits! It clearly plays some part in the stupid over-engineered and unnecessary connector.

Found the answer and have undone the connections.

Key message.....leave the red plastic tab alone
This account from jimbutterworth.co.uk comes up with the goods

http://jimbutterworth.co.uk/5seats.htm its from a Peugeot 1007 but it is the same connector type just green rather than black as on the clio

pic shows how to undo connector

Image

when its apart it looks like this

The other connector requires sliding a yellow plastic "tab" outwards, just to lull you into thinking you need to do a similar thing with the red plastic. Don't touch it!!! it will break!!! :-D

I will put a link to this on the Renault Section.

. . . & that is why I HATE Jeep electrics: every in-line connector is different, all with different locking mechanisms - most of which, having degraded with age, heat &/or UV exposure, break when you look at them!

The PITA Electrical Connector returns

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Two wires at one side, two wires at the other and this convoluted bit of plastic in between them. Defeating me at the minute definitely don't want to break it.

Have you got another photo of it from the top side? What car and where is it?

ATM I'm suspecting the blue bit has something to do with releasing the two sides.

Yes its not a "French Connection" more of an "Ellesmere Port" connection..ie Its a Vectra CDTI and the connection is a long wire going down to the DPF temperature Sensor mounted in the DPF.

I think you could be right. Screwdriver down the side of the blue bit and lever outwards perhaps. A lot of the othe electrical connectors have a ridged bit like the black one (on previous photo), which you press down and pull the connector out. This one isn't quite like those, but the ridged bit and the blue bit are probably the key to unlock it :-D

There's what looks like a small plastic hook at the bottom of the plug in the stock photo. I would first look to see where that is on the joined connection and see if there's something that can be lifted, pushed, squeezed or pulled to release the connection.

After that I'm finished!

Thanks Paul. I need to get that connector detached to pull the DPF and centre section of the exhaust clear from the car so I can remove the centre section from the DPF. Frustrating or what! I have no idea what engineering problem that connector is there to solve, and why it is so difficult to carry out a simple disconnection.

Its done :-D Not exactly sure what I did, but it did involve a fingernail under the blue bit and it pulled out to the side to release the connector. Yes if you put a stopwatch on me, reckon I would have wasted at least an hour with several goes.
