Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I believe there were many versions over the years Peter... They ran for a long time as I recall...

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Google Maps/satellite and street view cover vast areas of the country, and geograph has photos for each kilometre square in the UK. I notice from your pics of the chimneys that you may have become a convert to geograph yourself Jim
All 19 of our elusive remaining AA Boxes ( although of course only 7 remain to be photographed with an original Photo by an FCF member) and many at the various museums where boxes are preserved, are featured Street View, and many on the appropriate km square on geograph.
I was in the middle of a post on the Petrol Pumps theme to include a photo taken in 1927 by "Unknown Photographer" from the Durham Record, part of a collection of the Government funded Durham County Archives. I discover that they are very precious about their images and the use of them...totally unnecessarily so in my opinion...so the normal links don't work. My judgement is the copyright holder of this image....."Unknown Photographer"....will be more than happy to have their work revived and viewed by a wider audience!
This does take you to the page, click on the photo for a bigger view, but again don't try to make millions printing mugs/mousemats and duvet covers from it!

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Yes, some site are very precious about their content...
The only initial reason for using Geograph was my search for a good picture of the old Stewartby Brickworks chimneys...
They had the best and I must now go and explore their site in more depth...
Speaking of brickworks, back in the 70s we had loads around here and some mornings the atmosphere was utterly disgusting and it was hard to breathe it was so thick with whatever came out of those chimneys... It smelt and tasted - yes, you could taste it - very sulphurous...
Back then I lived near the Newton Longville Brickworks near Bletchley...
I love this old picture of the kilns..
(fully credited with source as copyright does exist on this picture...)

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Worth trying to do it Peter, once you have put up your first photo, it will be much easier to put up your next.
Its not difficult, it's just getting used to it. It goes like this 5 clicks and its done
So, you are doing a post as normal and want to put in a picture off your computer.
Give it a goClick on the "Attachments Tab" (found below the main body of the post screen)
Click on "Add Files" button......Find your file on your own computer
Click on file to select it
Click on the "Open" button and when file uploads
Click the "Place Inline" Button
That's it all you have to do now is finish off your post in the normal fashion and by clicking the "Submit" button

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Thanks Neil, I didn't think you could do that on here, thought it was a third party job - I am probably confusing it with another forum. I will have a look for the pic.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
We used it here for a number of years as we were running three diesel vehicles at the time, I had a 200 gallon tank which I could fill on the proceeds of a colour TV sale then, couldn't fill my car on one now. The price of oil soon soared and we couldn't afford to fill it up anymore. During the succeeding 30 years or so the pump got grown into the hedge from where it had just been extracted when this picture was taken. I put it on ebay and got £400 for it, not a bad investment.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Excellent picture Peter, and the story behind it too. Now you have the "uploading pictures from your computer" skills, I hope that you will lob up many more POTD is always a willing receptacle, but every thread benefits from the odd bit of visual interest.

I thought that was 'Hawes' in North Yorkshire, but Edinburgh apparently.
Neil
I knew how to upload like that, in fact I must have done it on here before but didn't realise it was the 'simple' mode, most others seem to need third party uploading. I will have to try and remember but that's getting more difficult by the day

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
Hmmmmm, a private pump. Back in my college days, a friend's girlfriend tried to set me up with one of her friends: the daughter of a local greengrocer, who lived in a Tudor house in a private road - with its own pump! Quite an attraction for a poverty stricken petrol head - but, unfortunately, she wasn't.
