oil leak possibly id'd

Unread post by KennyW »

Hi All,

Has anyone had an oil leak coming from the oil filter seal at engine as this appears to be the source ?

I first thought it was from oil filler breather pipe.

vehicle concerned is my X7.

Kenny

It was snowing in Twyford. I took one look out the window and went back to bed.

Very wise :) One of my Facebook friends questioned why I did not go for a long bike ride yesterday - as I most often do on a Sunday...

I had to go out, as I was working (today is my 'Friday', just to confuse people).

I went from Reading to Oxford (it was snowing), then from Oxford to Berkhamstead (still snowing), and then from Berkhamstead to Maidenhead (the weather had got fed up with snowing by this time), and finally back to Reading.

Has the oil leak happened since you've changed the filter or has it started on its own ? There's a large replaceable 'O' ring that sits on the housing - any idea if it's recently been renewed ?

bobbins,

It started immediately after the oil change and I think it's coming from the gasket where the oil filler housing attaches to the engine block.

I've to look properly at the weekend or next week.

If you have pinched the seal provided with the filter it could have leaked. I once did this on the 'O' ring provided with an accumulator sphere (on my BX), and I did not realise this until I got the "Stop" light on the dashboard. Not only had I pinched it, I had torn it (so now it was not a complete ring). Once I properly fitted a replacement 'O' ring the leak was resolved.

It could also simply not be tight enough? The thread might have a tight spot on it, so it felt tight when it was done up, but actually hadn't fully seated - I've had that before now.

I've just checked the oil filter top and think I didn't have fully screwed on.

I'm going to buy a galleon of oil and new filter and change same.

So will clean area and hopefully that's it sorted.

Thanks for all the replies

I think it's a spelling mistake. I think he meant to put schooner as that's a much smaller vessel :-D
