In a similar way I wonder if there is anything fascinating about a "Fisherman's Friend".

well like Victory V's they both come from Lancashire for a start. Fleetwood being the "home" of the Fisherman's Friend.

We read the label when they sent us completely squiffy, probably around eight years old.

Then went back for more

One thing I didn't inherit was my father's love of them, as personal central heating in the winter.

Oh - & they are (or were) hugely popular in Croatia (how DID the manufacturers learn that would be a worthwhile export market?)

Used to love Victory Vs as a kid... Like taking an illicit drug... We felt so naughty and rebellious when we scored a pack of them

Happy days... I can still taste them now :)

I think Fishermans Friend has triumphed over Victory V in that the company had a very much export-based strategy, and is very popular across the world including China, and the company has won the Queen's award for exporting on 3 occasions.

I think an outfit in Devon still make Victory V s if this wrapper is to be believed

Wonder if they were performance enhancing.

Slough is now in Berks ;)

Never knew Horlicks originated from the sleepy town of Slough...

I know the Ovaltine factory is nearby in King's Langley - one passes it on the West Coast Main-Line just before the Watford Tunnels and the crossing over the M25...

According to WADA virtually everything is  Even asthma inhalers... Mr. Froome take note ;)

I can't imagine anything made by Horlicks can possibly be performance enhancing unless it's to enhance sleep

The curious will always dig a little deeper, I wonder what the story is behind Horlicks having a production facility in a tiny New Zealand town :-D

Good reasoning though... Right next to the sources of all its raw ingredients ;)

A good bit of wisdom there...

I think its fascinating imagining the "merchant adventurers" setting sail (probably literally) for Australia/New Zealand/China etc and doing a very decent job of selling "Fisherman's Friends" "Victory V's" or "Horlicks Tablets" to people who had never tried them before!

Pre-packed VictoryV's? I only remember them loose (& not always whole) in a small white paper bag.

They could be bought loose or in a paper "tube"

The Victory V gums were even more potent, only seen them in paper tubes.

"The World's Winter Sweetmeats" "For Cold Journeys"

I presume they did what it says on the tin!

The early Victory V's were marketed as "Chlorodyne Gums"

Now you probably didn't have to scratch your head too much as to why such a concoction may have sold well if you consult the constituents of "Chlorodyne"

My mum used to buy these foul things when we were kids, so we wouldn't nick them from her. She always denied it, but curiously stopped buying them when me and our kid had moved out.
