What's on your Christmas list?

Post by RichardW »

No, not that list  (well it can be if you want!)

The list of things to do if the weather is kind and you can escape the famliy for a few hours...

307:
Required for MOT:
OSF spring and stut top bearing and drop link
NSR wheel bearing and damper
Possibly required for MOT:
Both front wishbones (which requires dismantling most of the front suspension, so would make sense to do the OS whilst the strut is out.
Needs doing:
Cambelt + Water pump
DPF clean (needs the water draining out and the rad removing to get enough room to get it out)
Thermostat
Starter (less said about that the better....)
Oil the gear cables
Grease the brakes

Picasso:
Remove the front seat and find out why it's jammed (again!)
Grease the rear brakes
Oil the gear cables

I've not managed to get any of the bits yet though, so that may hamper things a bit :? Maybe I'll just get the garage cleared out so I can get the 307 in and work on it!!

I think you need a Christmas hamper of bits, so as to un-hamper your job list!

Fine weather so that I can play with the Skoda and replace the fuel pump in Sally the Saxo...

And so that I can go for some nice long bike rides over the Christmas period too ;)

A GPS / Laser / Radar Speed Camera detector.

However, as I just got caught locally after a recent road speed change AGAIN - I have already had it as an early Crimbo pressie and it is now proudly adorning my windscreen :-D

So, Philip Hammond, you can swing for it!

Ha. No sympathy, use your eyes :P

I used to have a snooper Laser/GPS camera detector. It was ok, but the laser part wasn't that useful. It appears you'd already been nicked by the time it detected a laser beam..

The top end detectors can pick up a laser way before the police should get a reading (after all, a laser has to travel to your vehicle AND back for it to work, so in theory you should have double that distance to 'see' the beam. However, the police are wise to that, and set up the laser traps in such a way (after a corner, for example) that you will be in true detection range within that 'echo' distance.

You don't, because once the detector has seen the beam and alerted you to it, you're already nicked. You don't have to ask me how I know this...

The way a Doppler system works (radar or laser) is that it emits a pulse which is then bounced off the target in question and back This means that, should the target be 1 mile away from the device, the pulse has to travel 2 miles in total (there and back). Depending on the effective range this means (in theory, at least) you have double the detection range for a sensor device to 'see' the emitter device. However, the Police are trained to either set their 'traps' up in such a way as to ensure target vehicles are always in range (such as after a corner), or, for the manually operated ones, when experience and training help them recognise when the suspect vehicle is in detection range.

Aircraft with early warning systems use this fact to alert them of search radar while they are still out of 'detection' range, allowing the crew to either take avoiding action or (should they be running a Wild Weasel mission) fire a High speed Anti Radiation Missile (known as HARM) in an attempt to take out the search radar.

It’s true, as Mike says, with the latest laser guns, once you’ve been hit that’s it game over.

The only case where this can help is where it will pick up scatter from a car way ahead of you that has been targeted. I think mine has a range of 1-2 miles. However mine is a a GPS System with both laser radar rear and front so the sites are matched from the database (updated daily) and based on your actual location to get advanced warning of the fixed and mobile sites as well as high risk areas. The laser and radar then additionally tells you if they are active.

So far has been really useful in reminding me of danger areas and just keeps you on your toes.

It does, I agree.

How long will it take that laser beam to travel 4 miles, at.. 186,200 miles per second?

You aint going to have a whole lot of reaction time once it's got you ..

0.000,005,4 of a second. It's not the time the beam takes that's significant it's by how much the wave is degraded over the distance as to whether the gun gets a usable signal.
