Ahh those... The Laser tool will work on those too or failing that I use a pair of locking pliers...

Tried pliers but the jaws dont open wide enough and they keep slipping off. Think i'll swap over to those ring clic clamps although i'm not convinced they 'bite' enough to prevent air getting in.

No, normal pliers won't do Mike... I've told you what tool you need to deal with them

I feel more confident using clic clips than any other alternatives and they're so quick and easy to remove and refit.

I like them, provided I am tooled up to deal with them, large pliers, locking pliers, long pointed ones, I had a few goes with the proper tools, ok as long as you can bring them to bear on the clip, a friend has one on a short flexible cable, you would need a set.

A mole wrench can work well on those spring-wing clips. They open wide, can also grab the clip from the side, and will lock.
I do like worm-drive (jubilee) clips, but are there any on the market which are wide and decently circular? Many other types of clip need a fair bit of space around them to get the release tool in.

The only ones I found to be truly circular and exert and even pressure all around are the non-worm-drive versions Chris... Those with a long screw and a square nut on the end which tensions the clip...
Traditional Jubilee clips, I find, can cause a little 'ruck' in the pipe under the worm-drive bit which can cause a poor seal. This is especially so in the smaller sizes and those do not make good candidates for the smaller rubber hydraulic pipes...
Plus, as you say, the space they take up...

Re: Xantia 1.9td air ingress question ...
I'm going with clic clips for each pipe i swap out but sizing is an issue. Do i just fit clips which match OD of each pipe exactly and will clipping them form a good seal? Sounds daft but the specs for each clip and there's many, seem to allow for a couple of mm expansion. For example, a clip is sized at 8-10mm, my pipe is 8mm OD, will it be as effective a seal on 8mm as it obviously will be at 10mm. I'm confused by sizing. I could buy a full set and just choose the tightest fit but buying individually theyre very expensive for what they are ...

Re: Xantia 1.9td air ingress question ...
Nice day up here for a change so i've made a start on swapping over the fuel filter housing. It looks like this after removal. How should i clean it up and whats the opinions on whether i need any sealant or will the rubber seal be sufficient? Cant see any problems with the old housing and the old seal looked ok so i'm guessing this isnt going to sort my problems but its a start. Next up, i'll swap the pipes out, already sourced good replacements.

Re: Xantia 1.9td air ingress question ...
Looks fine to me Mike... No cleaning required bar perhaps a light scrape with a sharp blade around its periphery just to remove the little corrosion and then follow that perhaps with a rub of Scotchbrite...
Original seal should be good for reuse...

Re: Xantia 1.9td air ingress question ...
Cheers Jim. It's a new housing and seal going on otherwise i'll never know whether or not the original was faulted. Looked ok but ... all the pipes are off and i took the opportunity to blow down the return pipe. Seemed fine ... still waiting on a supply of clic clips and a longer length of leakoff piping for the injector behind the pump to the pump itself.
