Glovebox removal access blower resistor pack

Post by crapday69 »

Hi I'm Gary and this is my first post.

My problem is that my heater fan just stopped working. It might be the resistor pack or just loose or burnt wires, but I cant get to it as I can remove the glovebox. I have removed all the screws in the glovebox, front screws, the hidden ones at the front inside top and the one inside middle, the 3 at the bottom under the door. I cant see anymore but the glovebox is still stuck solid, I don't want to force it as it might break something. any advice as towhead I'm doing wrong and if this will help give access to the heater blower terminals.

Gary.

Hi and welcome to the Forum Gary. There are a few more steps to follow - but you'll need to disconnect the battery and leave the car for 10 minutes or so as you'll have to remove the passenger Airbag Switch.
  • Make sure you have removed the light lens and connector
    X7 Glove A.PNG
  • Remove the 5 bolts shown at (3):
    X7 Glove B.PNG
  • Remove the bolts at (4) & (5):
    X7 Glove C.PNG
  • Unclip the glovebox at (b) and remove in the direction of the arrow
    X7 Glove D.PNG
  • Next turn the Ram a quarter turn following the arrow (note will probably be anti-clockwise for the left hand side). Then remove the ram.
    X7 Glove E.PNG
  • Disconnect the Passenger disconnection airbag switch.
    X7 Glove F.PNG
  • Disconnect the connector at (d) and the harness at (e), then remove the glovebox.

As someone who has removed and (eventually) replaced the glovebox I'd just like to point out that although useful, the screws are in different places on the RHD model, don’t let that confuse you.
Also be prepared for some acrobatics when trying to put it back and reattaching the cold air feed tube too! I distinctly remember being upside down before I’d finished with it.

Good luck :)

Gary, Post up your VIN or PM me and you can clarify which part it is you need to replace - depending on your climate control unit (mono / dual). I can help you with a diagram once you know which part it is. What is the actual issue with the heater?

On the Right hand drive vehicles you gain access from the passenger compartment - but I've replaced the Pollen / Charcoal filter without taking the glovebox off. This is where it is located 0 item (2).
X7 Heating Resistance.PNG
The 'Criss cross grid you can see to the left is the cabin filter cover which you can get to easily enough (legs upside down mind)!

Unclip the connector (a). The earth bolt is (3) and there is another bolt at (2)

Ill get you the VIN soon. Its the dual climate control and I did change the pollen filter in the summer without taking the glovebox off. So I might not need to take it out then, heres hoping.

Some will recall I had this no fan problem on my C5 earlier on this year and it turned out to be not the resistor but the under bonnet fuse box that was damaged by corrosion and heat.

There's a thread on here about it somewhere with pictures if anyone knows how to find them.

Why is it when Mike Brewster buys a car with a problem, it never seems to be too serious lol.

I also had a problem with the heater blower stopping working on my X7 earlier this year. I went to all the trouble of pricing replacement new and reconditioned control packs and then found that it must have been an iffy connection.

I removed the unit and then, just on the off chance as it looked OK, decided to give it one more try. So, just try removing the electrical plug and reconnecting it. I also gave the connectors a spray of electrical contact cleaner (not WD40) as well.

Hi Marc, i've PM'd you my VIN.

Had a look at the wiring and it all looks ok. Unclipped the connection and reconnected it with a little jiggle.

All the controls light up as normal just no movement at any speed.

I.m sure I smelt a light burning smell on my way home from picking the car up, this was at the same time I noticed the blower was not working. I was involved in a side impact (other drivers fault) so the car was in getting its estimate. It must have been sitting for a couple of weeks without use. Don't know if that makes any difference. Looks like I might have to take it to garage as I really need the car before the 20th November.

I've not received your PM, but below is the heater detail showing the parts. Are you sure it is the heating resistance? There is also the heater motor control module shown at (10). If you've had a burning smell, then something surely isn't right - but I would want to know the cause first of all. Anyway here are all the components for a Bi-Zone Climate Control Model.

I see number 10 is the heater motor control module, but there are now arrows pointing to where it goes in the diagram. Sorry if I am being thick here.
