Frustrating C5!: Q2 why does my sat nav do this? (RT6)

Post by Y Cymro »

My C5 Techno is 2013 with the eMyWay sat nav and I'm wondering if the firmware and maps need an update. Is the following normal?

On a recent trip to Cornwall using the sat nav to navigate a route which I selected using the 'fastest' routing option, it insisted on directing me down some white single track roads as part of the route - which I wouldn't have expected it to chose as the fastest route. It did it on a couple of roads at different places of the county.

Also, when entering the destination as a post code, the predictive data entry allows the first 5 characters but often doesn't allow me to complete the last two characters. For example, it might allow me to enter W1J 0DA, but often doesn't know other post codes in the same area so wouldn't allow me to type W1J 0BD as the option to enter 'B' might be blanked.

If an upgrade is advised could you please suggest how this is done? The unit looks like the MyWay but it doesn't have an sd card slot. It does have a USB socket in the central arm rest box.

Thanks.

So first of all 5-digit post code mapping is common - it usually provides the main location using the 5 digits, then you select the address from the options displayed. Now there is a newer firmware update that supports 7 digit post code mapping:-

So we now need to check your existing firmware version:
  • With engine running, press and hold SETUP for at least 3-5 seconds.
  • Press the "setup" button for a short while, and the help menu will show up.
  • Select "Telephone/Audio Diagnostics" "Device Description" and "Software".
Post up the info shown here so I know what version you have.
As for the routing, you may need to tweak some of the other options / filters for the route. Have you still got your RT6 Manual? If not, shout and I can PDF you over a copy. Your maps may also need updating too.

Thanks Marc.
Software version is RNEG2.75.C.5. Many other software version numbers are displayed including
201212051200
CD:8643
BR:6.2.70.10:pr
CD_FW:35
And others I assume you won't need such as MAC address, Bluetooth version, GPS details, hours of use etc.

I have a PDF of the C5 handbook dated 03_12 which I assume is correct for my car which was registered Nov 2013.

Ok Steve, you have firmware version 2.75.

The 7 digit postcode mapping was resolved with a later firmware update and later maps (I can't tell from the info what map version you are using at present).
You have a couple of choices - depending on how confident you are in your IT skills...

You can take it to the dealer and ask them for the 2.86 firmware update. They should be able to order this CD for you either for free or a couple of quid (as it is not the maps, but the firmware), which is a functionality fix. This must be done with the car running and may take up to 30 minutes to complete - so allow time and don't switch off the car during the update.

Or I have the 2.86 firmware file I can link to you. But you will need to have a USB key formatted in the FAT32 file system, unzip the content to the key, insert, switch on car and it should ask to update (make sure it is not displaying navigation screen first) and always unpair ANY bluetooth phones first before the update.

Depending on your map version you have , you may also need to update the maps to get the 7 digit postcodes. The postcode is then entered into the TOWN field when entering a destination. I believe the 7 digit post code was supported in map version 2014-1 upwards.

Hi Mark
Yes, I'm ok with IT stuff so would be grateful for your offer of the link to the firmware update.

Looking at the Mapping Update screen of my SatNav, I appear to be using version '2013/2014 1ed' for all European maps. Would you mind pm'ing me with the process about updating to the latest version?

Many thanks
Steve

Marc, either YOU are colour blind or I am! That arrow pointing at the eject button appears red to me!

Ok, files are copied, CD is in head unit and upgrade has been going on for 15 mins. Shouldn't be too long to go, I'll report back with progress.

That didn't go well.

It read the disc and starting upgrading files. CRC checks counted to 100% and disc ejected for a couple of seconds then automatically reinserted. CRC counted back to 100% then a very brief error message stated flashing update error, then CRC started counting again. Now, after an hour, CD is still in unit and won't eject, and screen is black apart from message CD media checking.

I'm stuck as CD is in tray and won't eject, so I can't attempt an upgrade via USB flash drive.

Any assistance appreciated

Steve this can happen. Your system may need an interim upgrade first.
For now, power off vehicle and leave for a few minutes with battery negative disconnected. After a few minutes connect it up and try to eject the CD.

Others who have had this issue have updated to 2.80, skipping a version then going to 2.86.

I’ll get you the link for 2.80

Thanks Marc. I'll pop out now and attempt to remove the cd and will try the interim upgrade tomorrow.
