I would say 5 litres would be enough.

Needs about 3.75 litres for a full change. Note that you need a 27mm socket to get the top off the oil filter, and changing the paper cartridge is sometimes difficult, and always messy!!

Oil capacity without replacement of oil filter cartridge: 3.25 Litres
Oil capacity with replacement of oil filter: 3.75 Litres
Capacity between the MIN and MAX mark on the oil gauge: 1.5 Litres

Ok - so here's an important question - to get out as much of the old oil as possible - clearly it needs to be hot.

I'd like to leave it parked up - turned on and heating the oil like that. Would it be best to disconnect the fan, and then change the oil at a certain temp? Would disconnecting the fan be difficult - and how would I know when the oil is approaching a damaging temperature?

I'm asking for the correct procedure to get the oil as hot as possible (without damaging the car) whilst running parked?

I would NEVER disconnect a fan (unless fuses are blowing, and the fan is suspect), as if the connector fails for any reason the car is crippled. I would just take the car out for a 10 - 20 minute run. That should warm up the oil enough.

Just leave the car idling until you hear the radiator fan start up (turn off A/C obviously), take it for a drive first to warm it up quicker. The engine won't get any hotter than the fan trigger temperature.

The oil will.....a spirited drive will warm the oil far better than idle.

Heres the thing - surely if I disconnect the fan temporarily - and keep my eye on the engine temp gauge on the dashboard - I can get the oil very hot - but not too hot. I would sit in the car the entire time.

I'm asking if there is a good solid reason not to do it this way. Do I risk damaging anything - e.g fan connector or anything else?

The water temp will rise far quicker than the oil temp at idle.....only load will raise the oil temp significantly, eg driving it.

That said if you watch the gauge I cannot see and damage being caused.

I wouldn't disconnect the fan, as already mentioned letting the car idle until the fan kicks in is the way to do it. Oil at that temperature feels pretty hot if it gets on your skin. If you wanted you could run a flushing oil through the car. Oil is cheap I'd just change oil and filter every 6 k

I'm interested in flushing - but repeatedly see warnings against using additive engine flush products.

Whats the right way to do a flush without using an additive?

Are there better ways than others?

All "flushing" is with an additive, dump it in the filler cap and run the car for a couple of days. Some say it is good, others say it could block small filters....I have ever seen any examples of this

....I personally always use it as the inline filter will catch any crud imho.

On "new to me cars" I use a cheap oil (low saps to spec) and do a change without the flush , I run that for 200 (ish) miles then use the flush followed with a change to the high grade Total oil. I then use a flush additive for every change thereafter (at 1/2 recommended mileage).

Like I said oil is cheap, engines aren't. It's all down to personal preference but the old guys had the right attitude, oil everything. When was the last time you saw an oil can in a workshop?

Re the flush.....as said, I do this the first time I get a car, I see no reason to do it any other time as I have short changed anyway and used an flushing agent.
