I remember decades ago, maybe somewhere near Lix Toll/Killin (Tayside), seeing a surreal AA box. It was only about knee-high, with just the roof jutting up above the grassy verge. The body of the box had obviously been removed for repair, and the roof left on the ground.

A small note was pinned to it, on an AA printed letterhead, apologising to members for "temporary inconvenience" when using this box.

All it needed was for some wag to leave a shovel there! :idea1:

Also a memory of Lix Toll - the garage - ouside of which was parked, for years on end, a LandRover with 4WD triangular caterpillar tracks, and a ground clearance of at least a metre! Wonder if it's still there...

Lix Toll was where you turned right, iirc, and could take the road to Killin. Pub there, by the bridge over the Falls of Dochart, used to serve delicious salmon in home-baked baps. McNab's folly and burial ground a short walk away.

That's it, Neil!!!! \:D/ Had a coat or two of paint and some TLC since I last saw it, first time in the 70s. Quite a local landmark.

The original S11A one looks to have been replaced by a Defender 110 fitted with Versatracks:

It may have been the fate for other AA Boxes too Chris, as a coup de grace as evidenced by this picture of 706 and 597

..I found ou that you can get this particular AA Box and this Particular Patrolman on e-bay.

The Number of the Box and the Location match up Box 493 is indeed Poles Junction formerly sited on John O'Groats - Inverness A.9 at Dornoch B.9168 Junction.

Box Number 920 is described on the AA list as "Maidstone Motorway" and used to be sited on the A20 at Hollingbourne / 4 1/2 miles from Maidstone / 5 miles from Lenham

It must have been one of the Last "New" AA Boxes sited as the numbers only go up to 925 on the full list

I do not possess such a thing, although I have been intending getting one for a while. My new i-phone which arrives tomorrow may have a built in one. That will be me bamboozled with technology again :rofl2:
Chris may have one though. There are only the two of us going so we are parking a car in Fort William and doing it in one car.

I don't know if this one is real, but just watched the Denis Wheatley film "The Devil Rides Out" and spotted this AA box. Filming locations indicate High Canons, Buckettsland Lane, Well End, or possibly High Canons, Buckettsland Lane, Well End.

The clips here are a bit grainy - so I can't make out the name tag on the box! But then again, it could be just a prop :-D
