My Healey core plugs are also secured with two bolts and a strap...........a common modification on Austin engines of the time.

I really should update this thread more often.
Got the 32mm core plug in last Wednesday, with the help of a friend who held the socket and extension bar against it, while I gave it a couple of good sharp hits with a mallet. Not a drop has leaked out of it since, so it seems to be all good!
