..and the chalkboard sign can sometimes offer up the opportunity for a bit of reasonably witty creativity

There was a pub near Witley, Surrey with a sign to it off the main road: Warm Beer, Lousy Food, 200m...
The place did rather well.

In a world obsessed with the triviality of seeking approval for their words and pictures via the medium of "likes", this could be a simple masterpiece of original thought, but more likely copied from somewhere else on the internet....

Still, feel free to click a like if you like it!

To change the pace a little, does this sign seem a little odd?

Image

I found this one on the web, but was prompted to look because when in NZ earlier this year, I noticed that the public buses and some construction sites had signs with similar grammar. I thought it noteworthy at the time, and did actually photograph at least one, but lost it when my phone had a hardware meltdown (metaphorically).

You may (if you have a lot of time on your hands) be interested in the analysis which goes with the picture above: https://www.visualthesaurus.com/cm/dict ... espassed/

Has such usage arrived in the UK yet?

The Railways are a fertile ground for the "Trespass" warnings although haven't come across the threat of being "Trespassed" in any notices found.

Signs are in general a little bit simpler now. In the past a lot of cast iron and paint was expended in these sort of signs which felt the need to quote the appropriate legislation outlining the offence and the penalty as a consequence of transgression!

The Great Western went a bit further, they would bang you up for a month, if you didn't pay up!

Came across some notices which I'm not sure if they are fake or not. You may be able to confirm Peter! :-D

Hope the GWR had another notice indicating what constituted "proper use" of the paper :)

This one's probably a bit early for first hand confirmation

This notice can be found on the A27 near Tangmere (when it and its' twin have not been stolen AGAIN!);

I have seen it regularly, and it was a favourite of my Great Aunt Sylvia.

..and Tangmere has railway connotations and the "Spam Can" Battle of Britain Class Locomotive named after the RAF Station has appeared on POTD.

Me too.
Equally sadly, in hindsight, wilfully ignored them.
Should have known better as my dad had worked for BR for years.

Don't know about those notices Neil, they look a bit pristine, could be reproductions of course.

I like the signs on the station at the Trago Mills railway at Newton abbot, don't know if they are genuine or not but very amusing. Brilliant little railway that, I took the grandchildren on it - or rather they took me, I think it was a fiver for the three of us and ran nearly half an hour with stops.

I once knew a handyman who would put silly signs up everywhere.

"Wet Paint, this is not an order"

"If you notice this notice you will notice that this notice is a notice that is not normally noticed"

I have a load somewhere, on one of the many backup dongles no doubt, including:
"DRY PAINT"
"DARKROOM! KEEP DOOR CLOSED OR THE DARK WILL LEAK OUT"
"NO ENTRY WHEN THIS DOOR IS LOCKED"

Not the Newton Abbot branch of Trago Mills, but the Falmouth Department store, has attracted the attention of a "Sign Spotter". The Store which at he time had the "paint Department" in the basement, seemed overly obsessed in their notices of the danger of actually taking paint upstairs....

Thanks to Cassandra Parkin and her tongue in cheek "Great Moments in Retailing" blog

Image

and don't think you can get away with taking paint upstairs via the customer lift!

Image

You can only conclude that should you wish to purchase paint from the basement paint department, your highly dangerous purchase must be conveyed upwards by a member of staff who is suitably qualified to avoid spillages from the sealed tins!

Been there but not seen those. They have a large cut out of a policeman just inside the door at Newton Abbott which reads: 'free ride in a police car for shoplifters' or something similar.
