I've never practised yoga but I've heard nothing but good about it. Enjoy!

Karate does for me what yoga is reputed to do for most...

Let us know how it goes...

And above all, enjoy!

I think I shall, stretching used to feel good.

Its a good chance to socialise as well.

I met a few locals in the pub on Friday who were hilarious. Big tattooed scary looking folk who were actually lovely.

Maybe when i have a little strength and flexibility I will consider a martial art. I found in the past I didn't much like them as I'm good at hitting and grappling but terrible at getting out of the way of the incoming blows.

Socialising is good... Spice of life for me and I love it...

Never judge books by their covers ;) Some of the loveliest people ever look very intimidating...

Kartekas, those who practice karate, are amongst the least aggressive and laid-back people I've ever had the pleasure to know...

Runners too are like that and to a greater extent cyclists too and that is what attracts me to those pursuits...

You'll find yoga practitioners the same... they'll be lovely people...

Well, if Zel does not mind, I am going to have a brief rant about something else, but it has (for me, at least) a happy ending.

Something that irritates me (and, no doubt, other Forum members) are road users who feel that the rules of the road do not apply to them (mainly, but not exclusively, arrogant cyclists). Most of us have seen them going through red lights, veering across the road, cycling along pavements (that are not indicated as cycle friendly) and so on. I do know there are cyclists who observe and obey the rules of the road, but they are (barring members of this foum) few and far between. Today I saw one arrogant cyclist get his comeuppance.

I was heading out of Reading, on the A4 (Bath Road, towards Newbury), when I was stopped by a pedestrian crossing. I had better explain this location. It is over the railway line, with two lanes on each side. The left hand lane is to turn left at the nearby roundabout, with the right lane for carrying on down Bath Road (and to allow drivers to pull a legal U turn). Anyway, I was stopped in the right lane, behind a large white van. A cyclist in all of the usual gear was in the left hand lane. When the pedestrians had crossed (but the pedestrian traffic lights were still red) the cyclist then headed off, and went down the Bath Road. He was not very observant. If he had been, he would have seen something that was clearly obvious. Remember that large white van? It had Police markings! :-D Once the lights changed the Police van headed off down Bath Road, went past the cyclist a hundred yards or so, and then pulled over (I had to go around it, but there was safe clearance). The Police Officer got out and pulled the cyclist over. I could not hang around, but that Officer did not look at all happy!

My mate (and ex-neighbour, and previous resident of our house) is a prime example. Mid 40s, big, tattooes up his neck, pierced face, biker. Absolutely lovely bloke, superb with the kids, would do anything for anyone.

He's a Geordie, controller of a local bus company and is the one who gets called out to disturbances at night. He is as hard as he looks.

He was the one who I called when our lovely neighbour threatened my wife. He beat me to our house and kept me from inflicting pain on the bastard. As he arrived, the neighbour was outside the house. He says to my mate "if you've come to intimidate me, it won't work"..

The reply? "If I'd come to intimidate you mate, you'd already be in hospital".. my missus reported that he went very pale.

Speaking as a 70-100 miles per week cyclist, and spinning when I'm not cycling, I can say with complete faith that the majority of cyclists are utter (-expletive removed-) on the road, and I refuse to ride with them or be classed as one.

It always saddened me that the vast majority of cyclists are not cyclists but idiots on bikes.
The lack of compulsory training and testing does not help matters.
I've made my mistakes and nearly been squished a couple of times when it was my own fault.
Generally though I don't think I used to upset drivers too much.

When I was at Primary School in Scotland (Tweedsmuir, to be exact) the local Police arranged for us to have cycle training, and the Cycling Proficiency Test. All of our group passed. Although the CPT no longer exists, there is the Bikeability scheme. I feel that EVERY potential road user should undergo proper training on the rules and regulations pertaining to road usage.

I failed mine for not looking over my shoulder at the junction.
I actually had and I saw my examiner was not watching me, he was flirting with the girl instructor.
I kicked off big time and got thrown out of my own school on a weekend.
I cycled home on the roads.

Looking back I think it was rubbish anyway.
It should have involved real life road riding as per CBT for motorcyclists.

The majority I refer to as (-expletive removed-) are fully grown men or women, who, I presume also drive cars or ride motorbikes. It's nothing to do with whether they did the cycling proficiency or not - I didn't. It's simply whether they're a moron or not.

They are such snobs too. If I wear my lycra, helmet, reasonably expensive sports sunglasses, and my nice cycling gloves, nearly all of them will acknowledge me as they go past or the opposite way.

If I'm helmetless (often, I hate them), gloveless, normal specs and wearing a baggy t-shirt over my lycra... not one acknowledged me last time. Hell, last week I was out and had a badly binding front brake caliper. It involved removing a wheel to fix it. 12 cyclists in poncy lycra rode past before an old boy, no helmet, stopped to ask if I was ok.
