From time to time I get very interested in a motorhome, but am often stopped in my tracks by what I see as ridiculous asking prices for very old vehicles.

The Romahome is definitely the type of thing I would be interested in, whether based on the C15/Visa or the Berlingo, particularly the Hilo variant of either, but you certainly pay a considerable excess over what the base vehicle is worth, for the privelege of standing up, using a tiny cooker, and tiny sink, but granted being able to stretch out and sleep in relative comfort anywhere you choose.

Here's one I won't be looking at. The base vehicle is a 17 year old non turbo charged diesel Berlingo with 220,000 miles...value got to be well less than £450, I'd say barely above scrap value if truth be told. So for the other gubbins the owner is expecting another £7,500.

No for cheap "take your accomodation with you" motoring has to be a cheap towcar and a little second hand caravan which will have more space/ better facilities, and you'll have plenty choice £700-£1200 for something decent.

Match the colour scheme of the tow car and the caravan and it could even look cool and turn heads!!!

That is a stupid price Neil and I bet being Scottish it looks distinctly lacy underneath...

For a small conversion the Ford Freda/Mazda Bongo seems to be a popular choice. Japanese grey imports were very cheap until word got around.

Yes far better value than a VW equivalent, although with any camper van you will always have the 2 vehicle expense aspect as not really suitable for day to day driving.

I do like the little "Eriba" caravans but they do achieve a price bracket second hand well in excess of your normal standard vans but even so better value with a tow car of your preference/budget than a camper van/motorhome I feel.

Parked next to a C15 Romahome in a Berwick, and had a chat with the owners who were very happy with their little vehicle. It was a low milage example but still 20 odd years old and tell tale bits of rust coming through, and had needed a bit of welding even though it was bought for around £6,000 a year ago.

The two ladies loved it though and had just returned from CamperJam down in Shropshire, heading back up to Forfar.

The old diesel engine should be maintainable and give good service for a good few years, even if each year the MOT testers "hammer" pokes another hole through the structural metalwork underneath.

Not completely ruled out.....I'll still take a bit of interest in them coming up.

Every bit of rusty old tat is now proffered as a 'barn find'

It must be the most over-used term of 2017...

Generally those so-called 'barn finds' have never seen a barn in their lives, let alone being found hiding in one

naturally, having just spent a few more nights, with SWMBO, in the back of my 405 estate; I gotta make a recommendation for a decent size Estate car (with a reasonably upright tailgate)

Cooker, Sink all that stuff.... no, but we've got a couple of Camping stoves and its cheap accommodation

You can park it anywhere too including multi-storeys... and for us its our only car, so its 'regular run-about' too.

Not for everyone though :)

I was going for an expert or similar for those reasons pug .. many nights in a tent, and a decent sized car is a luxury .. plus as you say no height barrier issues ..good economy and speed etc..

now looking at building a trailer for the bike so at least I can enjoy the roads after parking the van :)

just a brief mention: what looks like a really nice 1990 'H' Ducato hi-roof spotted near me earlier.

Only spent a minute looking at lower cills and wheelarches, but noticed no rot, brief glance at interior looked good too, and 114k on the clock about right, £2.5k with long MOT seemed more than fair.

pm if interested for phone number and reg, to make further enquiries

Not sure this appropriate thread but the rules are loose here to say the least so here goes. Just starting my trip out to the New Forest and this passes by.

I have to admit to creating a similar sight some years ago . . . BX19RD + Swift Corniche, trailered back to Godalming from Dusseldorf, after the HG went pop. A great job by Green Flag and Caravan Club, who actually managed to board the same ferry that we were originally book for!
