RD45 questions + Microphone installation C5 X7 + Amplifier installation

Post by EDC5 »

Hi there, long time lurker, first time poster!

So I have replaced the RD4 in my '58' C5 with a RD45 (from a DS3), I used my Lexia to activate the fader for rear speakers and also activated the parking assistance etc.

My first question is about installing the microphone for the hands-free. I have removed the roof console an identified a two way connector that is for the microphone, unfortunately it appears to be a female connector. The microphone i have fitted is from a peugeot 607 and also has a female connector unless I am mistaken.

Do I need some sort of male to male adapter that appears here between the microphone cable and the white flexi cable from the loom?
Image

The second question is do I need to do any wiring behind the dash to connect the microphone to the back of the RD45? some people seem to have run their own cable like in this thread:
viewtopic.php?t=48421&start=30

Surely its just a matter of finding the other end of the cable?

Sorry for the wall of text but this is the last snag in what has been a frustrating upgrade (Obtaining a screen with the correct firmware for bluetooth and USB playback)

Cheers

This all depends on the system and factory options. I have the NG4 Navidrive 3D, and this has the MDS (services Module) which incorporates the built-in telephone and emergency services system. So the microphone on my system goes directly to to the MDS module and that links to the NG4. From the parts diagram across all the X7s, the microphone is the same part no: 6593 65, but some are shown with a separate cable and others without.

There is no separate part number for the cable - so one assumes it would either be wired into the car as part of the specific audio unit package or not depending on the other kit like the MDS. This is probably why some of the others had to make a wire and manually attach it to the back of the quad block.

Ah that's very interesting. Out of interest, where is the MDS module located? I might have luck finding the other end of the cable there. Is it above the glovebox as I've already had the front fascia out to change the EMF-C. (and route the USB input cable into the glovebox)
I'd rather not have to run a new cable if at all possible. Although my C5 is the exclusive trim it only had the standard RD4 stereo which I don't think could take a Mic input.

Do you happen to know which pins on the back of an RD45 need connecting to the Mic?

Image

From what I've seen its pins 3 and 9 of 'Part B' of the quadblock.

Cheers.

If you can post up your VIN I can see whether you have the MDS unit at all :-D - It was only supplied with certain options and I'll be able to tell you. It'll probably be in the morning now though

So I've had a look and from the diagram below (you won't have all these items) I can confirm that you don't have the MDS Services Module. What you do have according to the specs for your car are the following items:

1 - "RD4/MP3" RDS Compact Disc Audio System
8 - Radio Telephone Microphone (Independent Telematic Unit)
16 - Tel Interface Unit Support (Independent Telematic Unit)
17 - Independent Telematic Unit / Stolen Vehicle Locating Box
18 - Emergency Call Battery (Contained Within The Telematic Unit)
35 - Video Peripheral Connector (Glove Box)
X7 Variant Telematic Unit 6579 RX
X7 Variant Telematic Unit 6579 RX
I'm Assuming that in the glove box you have only the RCA sockets for Video / Audio in and not a SIM Card slot? Can you confirm that you don't have the Citroen Chevron and the red SOS buttons on the Central Console?

As we know the standard RD4 / MP3 unit you have is not bluetooth enabled and you don't have navigation, I can't really say what the Telematic Unit actually does in this case.

Anyway, if you have one, it is located behind and above the small dashboard monochrome display (that you have now removed from your pics) A small rectangular box (item 17).

NOTE: Click on the image to show definition
To answer your question, pins 3 & 9 would seem to be the ones.

The Microphone (8482) has 2 wires:-
Wire 8487 is the telephone hands-free input + signal
Wire 8488 is the Telephone microphone earth input

8480 is the Audio Unit, so you can trace where these are supposed to come back to the unit
8V NR = 8 Pin Black Connector
10V NR = 10 Pin Black Connector
12V NR = 12 Pin Black Connector
12V NA = Another 12 Pin Connector (plug Colour unknown or Not Applicable - probably inside the Quad Lock)

Thanks for looking that up for me. Yes, originally my C5 had a RD4 mp3 with no other features barring a rca (audio only) in the glovebox. I have no SOS or any sign of mobile integration in the car.

Obviously now i have fitted the RD45 (from a berlingo) and the Monochrome screen (from a DS3). The Phone link over Bluetooth works fine in all ways except for microphone provision.

I'll get the fascia off again and have a root around. Obviously i wont be expecting to find the telematics box, rather the loom that would connect to it. I assume that the other end of the microphone connector in the roof console terminates here?

Here is a pic I took whilst changing the monochrome screen, I'm assuming the loom for the telematics box would be up here somewhere
Image

By 'Audio unit 8480 ' do you mean the telematics box?

Ok, it gets a bit confusing - 8480 is called the "radio telephone transmitter-receiver" (which is what I think you are going to install?) or the Head Unit. I'm looking at circuit diagrams for your car - but there are a myriad of options that need specifying to get the right diagrams if that makes sense. Plus there is both a telematics section and an audio section (even though they crossover at some point, just to make it more awkward. So in that circuit diagram above, this is where it should go to on the new RT4 Unit (I think).

If you can't see that Telematic Unit behinf the display recess as per the photo, then it can't be installed...

Yeah, this is turning into a bit of an electrical minefield (as expected) haha.

This is just a guess: on the 2008 era C5's the handsfree setup was handled not by the headunit, but by a separate module (that my car doesn't have). So the pre-installed microphone wiring would be between the roof unit and the telematics module and not the headunit.

Fast-forward to the RD45 era and the headunit now handles the handsfree communication. Therefore, I think I need to patch the end of the mic wire that would plug into the telematics unit into the back of the RD45......... if that makes ant sense.

I can see why people choose to run a new cable haha

Thanks fr all your help, really appreciate it! :)

No worries.
You'll need to also check the configuration out in Diagbox as there will be some options that have to be set by default when changing wither the screen or the Head Unit. Let me know when you've sorted the other stuff out and I should be able to provide the specific options to be set.

Yeah, I noticed that there was an option in the Diagbox settings for "handsfree kit". This is only a guess but I think i should turn this off as the headunit is managing everything call related.

I'm going to get the Fascia off again in a bit and have another look around for cables etc.

Although its looking more and more likely that ill have to just run a wire at this point, although I'd prefer to do it properly [-o<

I'll post later with news (if any)

Yes, Hands free kit has several variations again and won't of been fitted at factory on your car.

I've taken the Fascia off again and can't font any other cables behind the EMF-C. I can see one that runs up to the ambient light sensor on the dash and that's about it.

(I'll add some more pics in a min)

Do you have a diagram of the loom to show where the Mic cable finishes up on the cars without telematics?

Although it is looking like I'll have to run my own cable tbh

    Image

Here is the cavity, nothing to see here cable wise.

    Image

Here's my quad lock. Note no pins for Mic or any other attachment.
I traced the 3 wires to the RCA connectors.
