CX GTI Turbo jerky off closed throttle..

I've just been lucky enough to aquire a Series 2 Turbo 1, and I'd forgotten just how bloody wonderful they are! Black, with black leather, this may (should) ! be the CX I finally keep!
It's just come out of long term storage, has been MOT'd, and I'm just using it-always the best way to find out what's wrong! It's very good actually, very quick (I'd forgotten!), and all the big important bits seem fine...
It's got one small issue. From a closed throttle in the lower gears, it's got very jerky pick up. It idles fine, pulls smoothly, no flatspots, but it's just hard to feed the power in from zero throttle. I can get round it by dipping the clutch, but I don't want to do that!
It's not a massive issue, as everything else is so nice, might just be something simple?
Its had an oil change, new plugs and the air filter is good.
Any thoughts?

I hear that's a symptom of terminal rust, and think you should give the car to me...

Aside from that & the obligatory drool I'm sorry I can't offer any real help, but please do keep us updated on this one ( and lots more pictures wouldn't hurt too!)

Only serious suggestion I can make is perhaps a bit of crud in the fuel injection from standing, not sure what system these use but if it's k-jet the metering plate thingy could be sticking too

If it's electronic then perhaps check the coolant temperature sensor as our EFi escort is jerky off closed throttle until it warms up

Mine was being caused by the wiring to the airflow meter being very tight and as the engine rocked on it's mounts it was pulling the plug loose. I rerouted it slightly and took it for another run and it was fine after that

Throttle pot? Are they fly by wire?

No throttle pot on these. Just an idle switch and a mechanical MAF sensor. Details somewhere in Davids blog last year.

What system is on these? K-Jetronic?

If so, first thing I'd do is clean the air metering flap and it's chamber - no, I mean *really* clean it. If you wouldn't be happy to eat your dinner off it, it's not clean enough.

The metering flap is a very precisely weighted system, and any contamination can play havoc with it.

I had an issue on one Saab where it would hunt at idle which turned out to be because the air metering plate had somehow become off centre and was fouling the bore in the metering housing causing it to drag - probably due to prior ham fisted maintenance prior to me getting the car. I re-centered it using I think it was overhead projector transparency sheets as a centering device after hunting around the house for something both thin enough and smooth.

Also make sure you have *absolutely* no vacuum leaks between the metering head and the throttle body. Any leak downstream of the metering head to be honest will cause the system to get well confused.

Have K-Jetronic on the Saab, so it's a system I know my way around pretty well - though being honest on this one save for cleaning the air metering unit now and then and setting the idle mixture when I first got it it's just behaved to be honest. Works really well when working right. Surprises folk no end when I tell them there's no ECU involved!

Thanks for all the replies, I may hold off for a bit on the kindly offers to come and take it away!
I've also noticed a fairly strong fuel smell when running with the windows open, I'm wondering if this could be blocked fuel breather, and this may affect it?
It's just done a fairly rapid 300 mile cruise, so it's obviously fairly robust, but I shall try thoroughly cleaning the metering flap, and I suspect the hoses have seen better days so will look at those.
How delicate/ what sort of cleaning fluids for metering flap?
I'm pretty sure these are K-Jetronic?

Just normal carb/intake cleaner is my choice and a firm toothbrush.

Oil residue is what you're shifting usually, as that always seems to find its way there from the breather system (even if it doesn't go anywhere near there - it manages!), and carb cleaner dissolves that nicely.

Yes, probably a good call. I did take the old one off and blowing through, seemed free flowing enough, but a new one can't hurt
I'm starting to think that's it's hose/vacuum/ air related.

So..........done a little more driving/thinking..... it SEEMS to be more jerky when it's warmed up, when driven from cold, although the idle isn't perfect-bit low- it's deffo less jerky??!!
Any thoughts peeps?
