Elmas Xantia V6 and Musical Stuff
Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and the joys of the countryside
My Meriva has a similar issue. I've been told it needs the track rod ends adjusting to centre the rack, then the steering wheel aligning afterwards. It's slightly more complex on the Meriva as the PAS is an electric motor under the dash which then needs recalibrating once it's all centered.
So, as I understand it... track rod ends and rack first, then steering wheel.

Xantia steering wheels are definitely a spline.Gibbo2286 wrote:I don't know about the Xantia but the C5 steering wheel/column has a Woodruff key not a spline so can only be fitted one way.xantia_v6 wrote:Drive along a straight road and mark the top of the steering wheel in the straight ahead position. Then with the car stationary, count the turns lock to lock from the marked position. If they are not equal, then the track ends need adjusting, which with care can be done without disturbing the geometry by moving each side an equal amount. Then remove and refit the steering wheel in the correct alignment.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and the joys of the countryside
I think you are right - one spline (or more!) out on the wheel. If you could get the wheel off you could check to see that the arrows on the rotary connector are lined up when the wheel is in the car-going-straight-ahead position.....elma wrote:So on my car the steering wheel travels more to the right than the left from the central position. Does this mean I do the tracking first as you recommended then assess the steering wheel again or does it mean that the steering wheel is on a spline out and should be adjusted to the left by one spline first?
If thats not clear the steering wheel is noticeably to the right when driving straight ahead but turns equally right and left from there although ends up in differing positions at full lock on either side.

Wheel off is a problem at the moment, all my socket sets except the 1/4" are in a container in N Wales. Annoying.

Ah! ok, I've had a few C5 wheels off but never a Xantia, it used to be pretty well the norm for them to be splined but some had a master spline i.e. one thick one so that they were foolproof.Mandrake wrote:Xantia steering wheels are definitely a spline.Gibbo2286 wrote:I don't know about the Xantia but the C5 steering wheel/column has a Woodruff key not a spline so can only be fitted one way.xantia_v6 wrote:Drive along a straight road and mark the top of the steering wheel in the straight ahead position. Same here James, although I know I'm a lot further away - always welcome
Come to Alasdair's on Saturday and we can have a mini FCF meet then
In fact, come early enough and you could parkrun with me at Trowbridge...

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and the joys of the countryside
What time are you guys meeting at Alasdairs? Potentially I could bugger off at midday, no way out of the morning.
I've contacted the guy and a bit of backup so I may make an escape.
What's happening in your garage Alasdair? Is it the lights? Do you have the stuff? Be happy to sort that out if you or you and Jim can take care of my steering wheel and LHM pump at the same time.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and the joys of the countryside
I will be here when Jim turns up (after his pant around Trowbridge early in the morning)....We have all day.
Weather is forecast to be crap, so I will likely move the Activa out (and wash/polish on Sunday) and park it next door so we could work under cover.
Yeh I have lights mate.....only sockets really.....wires are there but it was all screwed up/disconnected when the roof was done.

God knows, sockets don't work as they screwed them when re-roofing......no need to worry about them as extension leads do me just fine atm mate....getting the car fixed is the No1 priority.

Re: Elmas Xantia V6 and the joys of the countryside
Thats easy mate, if I make it I'll sort that for you. I'm waiting to hear back from someone about Saturday, as soon as I do I'll update here. Sounds like at worst we'll need 10m cable, does the breaker trip? I'd guess a cable got squished. I can't bring any as the boss will go spare but it's cheap if we need it, just have to pop to a factor and get some.
