That filter was well clogged Alasdair...

Only one thing to do... Run it for a bit. See f the problem is gone then after a while, drop the sump again and see if any new debris has accumulated...

You have absolutely nothing to loose...

That's pretty similar to the gunk in the last box I cleaned out, that had lost all drive suddenly.

That was five or six years ago and the car is still going as far as I know.

Mike, don't worry too much about the shards... All autoboxes grow little hedgehogs around their swarf magnets in normal operation.. A lot of shards come from the diff..

Here's a typical family of HP20 hedgehogs...

Image

This 'box did not have anything breaking up inside it and had grown these in over 140K. Nor was any significant wear evident on any steel items in the 'box...

Wow that filter was seriously blocked! That lends the blocked filter theory some weight for sure. :-D There's no way it could keep the supply rail pressure up for long with a filter clogged that badly, so the blocked filter could well be the major cause of trouble. It will be starving the pump of oil and the nasty noise will be the pump running dry, which should be avoided if possible.

As Jim says, you have nothing to lose now apart from some oil and time. Clean it all up (hopefully the filter cleans up nicely) chuck in the oil and see what happens!

An example like this shows the true folly of "sealed for life" (yeah right) gearboxes and non-removable (without lifting the gearbox out) filters - 4HP20 I'm looking at you! At least here you were able to get the filter out in-situ by dropping the pan.

I saw this car in the metal yesterday, it really is a cracker and as sound as a bell... No a trace of rust anywhere....

Almost a time-warp...

Quite fancy one to trundle down to the South of France in May. It'd have more space and be smoother, and not much less economical than my current steed.

Well it drives.

All started perfectly with smooth changes.

Then is was like it missed a gear before getting drive back, a large rise in the revs but if I came off the gas it would take the gear OK.

2 (naughty country road) miles to the next village and back.

Sounds like a big improvement then from no go to just misbehaving a little. =D>

Remember only half the oil will be drained out in the last change so there could have still been quite a bit of muck sitting in the torque converter that is now plastered to the filter.

I'd probably drive it a bit more to see if it gets better or worse, then check the filter again in a few days to see if it is clogging up again.

Well I have been out again, 6/7 mile round trip, I was lucky to get home. The box is still "clutch slipping" with revs rising and loosing drive with any load. This got worse as I proceeded.
The only way I could get up my drive was in reverse !

Scrap hammer is twitching..OR

this is running up to speed
