Tappety 406 hdi

Unread post by xsaras4ever »

Hello to all , we have been having BSI problems with the 406 (110 hdi) which are in another posting and they have been now worked-around, just yesterday.

However, this morning we started the 406 - all iced up hard - started straight away.

Turned on heaters and screens to de-ice, popped indoors for about 15 mins for a cuppa.

Back out to 406 and its sounding tappety - we were hoping it was just a dropped spanner clinking against the motor - but no.

Rev it and its gone.
The car still drives great.
Tappety at 800rpm, disappears at 950 rpm.
Also disappears after about 15 mins of normal driving.
Cracked cam bucket maybe (is that the correct term ?)
All fluids are present and correct.

Any ideas ?

1st thing I would do (if it is not self destructing and really loud) is to use this...

... and check the oil pressure at 800rpm. Could be not high enough; used to be common on worn petrol engines!

If it only does this with a very cold engine, and it disappears, it could just be a valve/tappet clearance a bit on the wide side, showing up when very cold.

Clean and correct oil filter?
Grade of oil too thin?
Oil pressure relief valve (assuming there is one) stuck slightly open?

Hello to all , will try the product - thanks.

Also , where is the pressure relief valve ?

Yep , good filters and correct grade of oil.

Its Dad's car and a pain in the butt really. He is only here in France for 2 weeks so am tempted to set the idle at 1000rpm and get through the next 2 weeks.

Is that possible with PP2000 ?

AFAIK it's not possible to alter tickover speed on anything in the last 15 years or more. This is fixed and monitored by the engine ECU or similar.

Have a look at the crank pulley - when this fails it can make sorts of odd noises at idle. First sign is usually that it is covered in rust.

Hello to all - the old git is gone home now and the 406 didn't explode.

Noisy cold and hot now - took the oil filler off and its coming from in there - camshaft off we reckon to have a look - but at least no hurry now.

Will post an update - sometime in the distant future..............

Tappety sounding 406 hdi - SOLVED

Unread post by xsaras4ever »

Hello to all , we left this car alone for a few months.

We started it and did a proper investigation - without the pressure of needing the car to be used immediately.

It turned out to be the crank pulley - fitted a new one (52 euros) and its all back to normal.

Well done RichardW :-D :-D :-D
