How much driving does it need between drains ?
Personally I would give it at least 100 miles or more and a few weeks normal use between multiple changes.

Not only do you have to allow a short time for the old fluid (still in the torque converter) and new fluid to mix so that the new stuff has fully diluted and mixed with the old stuff before you drain any back out again, you also want to give time for the fresh detergent agents in the new fluid to work their magic on any deposited gunk, so that it is released into suspension in the fluid and then drained out during the next change. (Or at least half of it will be...)

If you just drove around the block between each change and did them all in one day the detergents wouldn't have time to work which means that after you'd finished all three changes the detergent would start dislodging buildups which would then float around in suspension for eternity...or at least until they get deposited again. The oil would be clean, at least initially, but the box would not be, and the oil would probably get dirty again quickly from all the deposits loosened up by the detergents being held in suspension.

In that case I would do the first oil change now and leave it at that until the car is on the road and has done at least 100 miles before bothering to do a second change... :)

If you can't drive the car then doing the second and third changes right away would be pointless as you won't even get enough mixing time between changes let alone time for the detergent to clean the insides of the box.

One other point I would make though is that if you can't drive the car on the road at all even one change might not be possible, because to set the oil level correctly after the change you have to have the gearbox up to the correct specified temperature, (measured on a Lexia) and the only way to do this is drive the car a good 5-10 miles...

So really you probably need to wait until the car is on the road again.

I'd say no more than 100 miles between the first two...

Maybe 200 miles to the third...

Would running the car In Drive/on the ramps, with the drive wheels removed get the box pumping enough ?

The problem of it "slipping into neutral" is intermittent so diagnosis (eg oil change) on a non taxed car is going to be hard if it cannot be driven ? :(

For the purposes, yes I think it would Alasdair... Main thing is to get the 'box and ATF nice and hot and well circulated and agitated...

That is to know.....and worth a try for the first-2-second change, I would hope to feel a difference by then.

Is that the one that was listed on ebay ? I was interested in it but SWMBO caught me looking and told me no ! Looked like a fairly decent car to me.

Alasdair are we in competition with each other as who can collect most xantia's. I have noticed that all your's are s1's and mine are all s2's. As in your previous statement not all working as should be. Me thinks we are both very addicted to these machines with green blood. I do believe i have drank about 10 ml or more these past few weeks.

If this one cannot almost fix it's own gearbox.....I will be cutting the rear door area out, the sills will be removed, a sphere pressure tester built for the HP pump etc

If the transmission is "slipping into neutral", unless the fluid level is low, it is very unlikely that it will be fixed by any number of fluid changes, as the transmission is suffering from wear or internal damage.

It is fairly common now for these older ZF transmissions to have odd symptoms caused by leakage past the governor seals, which is relatively easy to fix (usually) without needing to remove the transmission.
