If I remember right on the HDi you need to remove the crank pulley to get the sensor off. Is it the crank pulley that's stopping it ?

Re: C2 crankshaft speed sensor
The car has, or did have a/c. There appears to be a plate immediately behind the crank pulley, and it's a combination of the plate and pulley that seems to be stopping me fitting a new sensor. I managed to get the old one out but only after drilling out the top plastic locating lug. The crank pulley is larger than other ones shown in the Haynes manual, but I think you are right and I will have to remove the pulley. Thank you for your help. Have a good New Year.
