You have to remember the X7 is generally a heavier car to lug about with Kerb weights to about 1763 for the 3.0 HDi V6 (240) models, whereas the earlier C5s were about 1480 to 1520 for the 3.0 Litre Models. Incidentally - that 3.0 you saw on Autotrader might be nearer the Torque, as the 3.0 HDi generates 240 Bhp and less for the 2.7 HDi, so that's probably a typo by the dealers as usual!

That's it Marc x7 is definitely off the menu now it would have been stretching my budget anyway. Thanks for the info. They probably need a little more testing for longevity first if people stop hitting things with them there are so many for sale pre dented.

No reported problems like that on the DW10 in c5s that I have seen? Bullet proof, even if oil changes left to run all the way to the recommended service intervals as far as I have read.

C5 is a heavier car than the Xantia, hence why 90bhp in a Xantia doesn't make a good comparison against 90bhp in a c5 imo (however, as I said, I haven't driven a 90bhp c5).

As for fuel economy, mine spends most of its life being driven round town. When I get out of town on local country roads, I don't drive it in the slightest bit economically. Most of the long runs I have done in the car have been towing a car transporter trailer (with another car on it) yet it still runs between 40-50mpg, which is just excellent under those conditions imo.

As I said though, horses for courses and we each have our preferences/views on what is good/bad.

with the nights drawing in it is only just possible to see one a day.
I have struggled to see any C5's on the road around Kettering
I saw one Mk1 estate going through Kettering at night I recognised the rear lights, that was about three weeks ago.
He was heading for Corby.

Thanks for the thoughts about auto boxes Jim but I once borrowed a Cortina mk3 1600 auto after pressing on the brake hard with my left foot at 40mph and smacking ones headnon said windscreen I decided it wasn't for me after all don't know what I was thinking even posting this question above.

Several people I know have done that too.

Best 'cures'

1. If possible tuck left leg back out of the way so you're not too near the wide brake pedal with your left foot as its instinctive to press the awol clutch pedal...

2. This kind of works: Keep your hand off the selector lever unless you are actually using it as "somehow" having one's hand on it tricks the brain into thinking you have a manual so you'll by habit go for the clutch.

(1) works best until you are used to it.

A lot of the 'I accidentally stood on the throttle and went through someones wall / fence" things are as far as I am aware caused by using two feet in an auto. Its not something I would do unless it was really necessary (stuck in snow / mud where you need more than 'creep power' to get out) but each to their own...

Oh I even tried bungee cording my left ankle to the seat frame nearly took me foot off completely.

When I took over my father's car, an automatic Vauxhall VX2300 Estate, I tried driving with two feet as I'd read that this was the way that it was done in the USA.

I did it for a week or so and then went back to just using my right foot and never had a problem with an errant left foot. I did occasionally go two footed if I needed to pull away from a stop when on a hill. Never had a problem then either.

The V6 Xantia is even better as it has a footrest for redundant foot...

The XM does too but it only works if the car is an LHD... They never re-worked it properly for RHD

Even when they have a left
footrest, for some reason I just instinctively don't use it in an auto, must be some built in safety instinct of mine after the first time I drove my old bosses Auto Volvo back in the 80s and instinctively tried to hit the non existent clutch when having to do a quick stop!

I used to find my left leg/foot would 'go to sleep' on long journeys in an auto so I took to swinging my leg between the footrest and tucking it in under on regular occasions to keep it awake...

My right leg/foot would do the same when on cruise control so I'd end up swinging both in turn!

Maybe just me.. I must keep myself moving at all times. Not good at being static...

Well almost on the verge of buying a Rover 2.0l diesel 75 Tourer in mint condition for nearly 3 grand.

Then..........

I spotted a 2003 2.0l C5 HDi 110 bhp Automatic estate for sale. in that light blue they seem to call silver.
it has done 124K which isn't to bad for an HDi diesel they say they have receipts to show cambelt was done at 88K.

so gave them a ring and no answer so left a message and the chap phoned back
they are going away and shutting up shop for a couple of days so I have made an appointment to see the car
Saturday afternoon.

I am... the weather holds in the midlands.

Its a VTR apparently with proper suspension. I guess it will be using Eolys fluid or there is some other catch
especially as I am avoiding the notorious DMF by going Auto.
