your views please on Mk1 C5 2.0 Hdi automatics please?

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Im thinking about buying a nice C5 2.0 Hdi auto at around the 89K mark for mileage.
with full service history.

as the engine in my 1.9td Xantia has had its day
and is becoming a money pit.

Has anyone owned the C5 Mk1 auto and are the boxes good for longevity?

any reoccurring problems with them please?

thanks in advance

Nigel.

Nigel, I'd have thought an automatic would have suited you far better going by the problems you have with your legs nowadays...

I can only peak of the 4HP20 gearbox with any authority and I assume a MK1 C5 2.0 will have the AL4 'box. Is that correct?

Thanks for the thoughts about auto boxes Jim but I once borrowed a Cortina mk3 1600 auto after pressing on the brake hard with my left foot at 40mph and smacking ones headnon said windscreen I decided it wasn't for me after all don't know what I was thinking even posting this question above.

Don't press the brake pedal too hard when you are travelling at high speed. The Emergency Brake Assist will cause it to dump speed at a frightening rate of knots! When I heard the C5 had this I tried it out. I still don't know what happened to the brick wall I think I hit!

Nigel, autos have come a long way since the Cortina days and it takes minutes to get out of the clutch habit.. In fact when I ran autos I could seamlessly swap between auto and manual cars with no issues at all...

Don't dismiss them on that basis... I still miss an auto on long trips...

We'll Jim it might mean I no longer need cctvv in the foot well to find my foot position on the pedals. Do modern autos still have a clutch to replace? And do the diesels have a dual mass flywheel?

The years you are looking at on C5's have a DMF on the diesel manuals OR proper auto boxes with no clutch or DMF.
The C5 is a better car all round than Xantia for lugging , space, road tax, rust etc. It is also more straight forward on suspension, pipes etc.
There are about 4 or 5 jobs will need doing on them. If you are lucky, some may be done.
Mrs Lexi offered me money to go buy a "decent" Honda or Toyota this week, instead of messing with old C5 Citroens. Doesn't she realise that a Donkey is not just for Christmas?

I think you did the right thing, Jim understands them, I don't so if I had one fail it would probably write the car off, the manual boxes usually last forever and give a much better fuel consumption.

I suggest you look for 2.2 HDi's with the 4HP20 gearbox instead of 2.0's with AL4. Or start looking ph2 C5's with 2.0 HDi 136 and AM6 6-speed auto box...

I have experience of AL4 in a 1.9TD Xantia, 2.0 petrol and diesel C5's. AL4 is damn horrible with a petrol engine but decent with diesel. But it has it's problems, although they are mostly repairable.
My wife had a '02 2.0 petrol AL4 for three years and i never got the gearbox faults sorted out. Changed the solenoids and the whole valve block a few times, also the pressure sensor but the problem kept coming back. It was just like the usual AL4 solenoid glitch, but changing them didn't help.

Now she's got a 2.2 HDi auto, which is far smoother than a 2.0 HDi with AL4 and has much more power.

Thanks for that I'm slowly going off autos all together if the boxes have these faults.
don't think I can afford to run a 2.2 litre motor either.

does anyone know which spec I have to chase to find a C5 with front fog lights please.
I've been looking at all sorts exclusives and VTR's but haven't yet seen one with front fogs.
or do they build them into those massive front light units on the MK1's?

thanks
regards.
