Well spoke to soon I think it could be worn injectors now oil is not being burnt as it hasn't moved on the stick for over a week. Coolant is fine as you say incomplete combustion maybe broken rings or bad injectors?

No, it's shims Nigel... Easy to check, harder to adjust

They would be harder to adjust on an engine that lays towards the bulkhead wouldn't they.

No, the hard bit is removing the cam to swap shims... The rest is easy - I even did a calculator to determine the required shim sizes years ago, which I still have up on my website somewhere...

well the hunt for an auto goes on, it is surprising how little Auto's do to the gallon
most 2.0l hdi's rarely seem to achieve more than 45 to the gallon and for a diesel that's annoying.
when its counterpart manual can achieve 50+ to the gallon or more.

Ive started looking at 1.4 and 1.5 diesel auto's now which apparently do more than 50 to the gallon.
so far Ive only found one with similar bhp to the xantia at 89 bhp and that's a Toyota Corolla.
god knows who makes the engines for these cars.

it is very surprising to see reviews of autos that say Wow fuel economy is amazing at over 30 to the gallon.

please?
I have realised that the MPG for a 2.0l hdi in a C4 Picasso Auto is about 8mpg higher than that of a 2.0l hdi C5 Auto.
Must be a weight thing.

I have driven them on occasion - mostly as courtesy vehicles. I can't say that I would have a vehicle with this system by choice. For me it was a bit too quirky / jumpy / lurchy (for want of a better description). For me it would have to be fully automatic or manual. The piloted system, with electro-hydraulic actuators on both the clutch and the gearbox system are another thing to go wrong IMHO, but it would be unfair to criticise based on my relatively short and intermittent use of vehicles with these systems. Although they are supposed to be adaptive to driving styles - and that you can have a choice of manual shifting or automated shifting - it may well cater for your needs. Like any technology - do some reading up and research on the EGS system and see what sort of possible issues other users have encountered.

My mate's just nearly been ruined by a failed EGS on a 2.0 HDi C4 Pic - I'd avoid if I were you....

The reason EGS is better on fuel is because it is a manual gear box. It has a robot shifter to do the changes.
Normal clutch and lower emissions than a true automatic, so usually lower tax.

Thanks again everyone. I keep saying I've more or less made a decision then change my mnd again. It is longevity I am looking for here coupled to the great Citroen suspension. I am veering toward a later 2007 2008 hdi manual estate. Yes I know it will have a dmf and quite possibly fap to but xhit happens and you either embrace it or run scared of it all I generally like to look for something 6 or 7 years old and try to keep it at least 10 years. My old xantia is 18. I am hoping I can still disable the airbag system like I learned to do in my xantia which would have caused a lot more trouble than needed if it fired. I like the steering wheel in the later car at least citroen have realised that the airbag wiring loom was being damaged buy being twisted in the steering wheel. I'll have to decide between auto and manual now I'm not sure if I can avoid the dmf by going auto I don't know enough about the auto and this is the rub for me which pushes me back toward a manual car. I am enclined to have another shot at selling the 2cv in the spring and buy a little cheap to run and tax auto or semi auto as a second car.the little cv has been fun but its no fun on your own when your offspring are not interested. So maybe that will be my ticket into auto world in time. I Like quirky hey I own Citroen's. So maybe a little engined low tax auto for cheapy town runs. And the big c5 for longer comfortable runs. Maybe just maybe all the emissions nonsense will dissipate as we withdraw from the EU?

A couple of things: - I would certainly NOT deactivate your airbag system (if this at all possible on later cars, due to the safety systems integration), as it will certainly invalidate your insurance, but more importantly put the lives of you and your passengers at increased risk of serious injury or worse in an accident.

Secondly, the DPF systems on diesels are there regardless of transmission type - it helps to ensure the car meets the prevailing or next planned emissions standard at the time of manufacture.

The emissions issue won't go away - PSA cars are in the main, made in Europe (although increasingly in India, China and the Middle East) and they will certainly not be developing multiple versions of engines for countries inside and outside the EU based on their attitude towards pollution. It's called corporate responsibility - and considering the levels of pollution in places like China, I can only see them making further developments to reduce emissions even more.
