Urgent C5 radiator fan help needed

Unread post by boristhespie »

Citroen C5 2ltr HDi 2006 (136bp) Exclusive.

Put this in to garage as had fault saying particle filter liquid low. Garage said this is an error re the filter cap and replaced the cable which they said was corroded. While there they found fault codes indicating a failed thermostat and a seized radiator fan. I went to France this year and was driving about quite the thing for a month in 35c with no issues. Anyway they say it needs t anew fan.

Apparently the new fan costs £500 from Citroen plus vat.

on top of thermostat and other work looking at a BIG bill again. Can anyone advise me re a source for cheaper fans? The car is waiting so I need to get back to them re what I want to do. I have tried ebay but haven't the nue to know ehich part to buy. I did find one
Item Number 15219182223

Not sure this is what I want.

Are you sure that it is a C6?

Post up the VIN, and someone might look up the original part number for comparison.

Does the radiator fan actually work if you leave the car idling for a long time?

Oops it is a C5. Thanls for pointing it out. Re Vin. I am at work and car in garage so can't say. I can only say I never noticed any issues at all. The Climate Control was working, the thing dealt with heat for a prolonged time and heat never showed as Temp rise on the dash. Not sure if this is to do with the thermo. The guy at the garages was surprised but suggested maybe the thermo was stuck open.

I am not at all mechanical minded.

IF it is a C5 2ltr HDi 2006 (136bp) Exclusive, I got my fan from a company in Poland, found them via EBay.

If the aircon / climate control was working then the rad fan was also working (at that time). If the fan isn't working (seized, fuse blown, etc) then the aircon won't operate is the aircon ecu checks to see if the fan is operating. In fact, when you switch the aircon on the fan starts running regardless of engine temperature.

Aircon works. The mechanic said the fan was seized. Seems strange if it needs the fan as you say but thats what they said so I go with that.

Had aa look at the thing tonight. Totally duff. Looks well rusted.

I had a look at the Polish guy's ebay page. Looks great. Garage not sure they have what I need. The numbers don't match but they say they may be okay. Not sure of parts number though. Could someone with the knowhow help with this? I'd be very grateful. Got my VIN VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Okay, still not got car. I ordered from the guy above. It came in 3 days, not bad. They were also doing the thermostat. Anyway fan fitted but not working properly. The ECU appears not to be controlling it. They suggest that because the previous fan was siezed. Heat somewhere may have melted a connection or blown a fuse.

They also cannot use their diagnostics to run a test on the fan. Nothing happens. So they are spending time (a lot of time darn it) with the schematic, trying to trace the fault.

Ideas?

On my Mk1 C5 when the fan seized the extra loading blew the maxi-fuse. These are supposed to be a dealer replacement job (ho-ho) and as a result I didn't know which one was which. Fortunately the blown one was fairly easy to identify. The Mk2 is undoubtedly different in detail but that would be my first port of call.

Aren't the two fans controlled by three relays (activated by the engine ECU) on the car? These three switch the fans on, and between slow and fast speed. External relay connections get weathered and corroded - check them out. The relays are standard 30/40A changeover, so cheap and easy to replace.

Slow speed is obtained by the fans being in series, fast by being in parallel.
The series operation requires that the fans are electrically identical (to work correctly), so replacing one with a non-standard item, if this has been done, could cause complications.
