My C5 Estate 2004 - 2008 Front brake pads need replacing
has anyone used a good upgrade from the normal Valeo stuff or found even better ?

I use genuine Citroen pads, never have any issues, squeaks and they do the job. Red / Green? Not sure what you mean, but whatever you choose make sure they fully fit the disc or you'll get the lip effect and will likely have to replace the disc too at the next change.

I needed discs so bought upgraded discs and softer than citroens pads. As citroen want the c5 discs to wear quick and replace often. That costs . So now I just change pads. Much cheaper.

Which Brand / Type of Discs did you use then?

Think I went with mtec. And there alright, there was a big difference in bite with them. Its important to not use the citroen pads though or any aftermarket long lasting pads. Greenstuff are good from what I hear although I did just pick up cheap pads from my local parts place.
