The heater hoses are the worst! If they ran *under* the car, fine...but inside the centre console? Just why?!?

I confess that one of those is still there - because he first one I pulled out was fine, seemingly being inside the car had significantly slowed the degradation. Have made sure I have enough in stock though to replace it if needed!

The bleed hose from the top of the heater matrix is a pig to change too...it was one of those green fabric covered ones (if you know Estelles you'll be groaning at the mention of them) so wasn't optional to change!

Temporarily lost the ability to bring an image of the car into the thread with the equipment I'm using, but that's spot on Alasdair. And i will give you your 99th heart for that :)

But what are you going to bring your century up with?

Came across this. Certainly looks like camping car material to me, not many of them about, and has a reasonable amount of je ne sais quoi in a boxy semi ugly but interesting at the same time way :)

£4,695 buy it now price

Just had a look at to see what the Auction result was for this one on July 16th, and found it listed again for the September sale so I presume didn't make its reserve at the auction. Its now up for a buy-it price of £8,720 prior to the auction. Don't think the site actually posts up the results with prices for their auctions.

Few of the others also re-appearing. Some nice vehicles, but maybe its a buyers' market for some of the "everyday" classics, or auction houses are over-optimistic with their "estimates".

Just watched "Rover the Long Goodbye"

I have to admit that I am always drawn to the P5, and more especially the P6 whenever I get the chance to mooch around classic auctions either on-line or in the flesh. There were quite a few P6's on offer at the Morris Leslie Auction in Perth in May, whch I had the chance to look at on the viewing day. To be honest, a little disappointed on opening the doors, and being greeted with too much of an aroma of old leather and some well aged well cracked upholstery.

They are still very much a classic under £10k and very often under £5K. Case in point this white P6 2000 TC-one which I did see at the May viewing which is up for auction at the August 27th Sale this weekend. Guide price £1000 to £1500......and for those who like it like me....mango upholstery.

Strangely enough, never knew or heard of them before but hiding away on the Hobson Industrial Estate near Burnopfield County Durham which I have been past literallly thousands of times, there is the Furniture Clinic, leather care and repair specialists, who if their website is anything to go by would make short work of tranforming those tatty mango seats.

Before and after photos for this job

Car: Rover P5
Job: Change the colour of two front seats to match the rest of the interior. These ivory seats were bought as a replacement for the old red ones, which were a wreck. The colour was changed so that they matched the rest of the interior.
Process: Prep & alcohol clean the leather. This softens the leather as it removes the hard and brittle top coat. As the colour change is fairly easy, 2 coats of colour are sponged on followed by a third with an airbrush. The leather is then sealed and finished in satin.
Kit: Medium leather colourant kit with a colour match
Cost: £55 Medium Colourant Kit + £10 colour match fee. TOTAL = £65

Neil, thanks for posting the video. Hope you enjoyed it! I love the opening couple of minutes - all wonderful stuff, with choice remarks by QW, ZZ et al.

Those front seats in the middle picture really do look distressed, Neil! What a contrast to the rest of the car...
Nothing, though will get me enthusiastic about Mango (or Avocado), though.

If anyone is after a P6, I've had "all three" - SC, TC and V8.

The original single carb '2000' appeared in 1963, and was a bit leisurely (but immemsely comfortable, and handled really well) and would achieve about 28-30mpg average. The 2000TC added power, at about the same mpg.

The real game-changer was the 3.5 litre V8, which transformed the car, not in terms of bhp (about 130), but with oodles of torque on tap, available from near-idling to top speed, around 122mph for the manual. A deliciously zippy and responsive engine.

Automatic was available on all engines, but being a BW65 was a bit of a slush-box, and dented consumption by about 4-5mpg on the 4cyl cars, and reduced it on the V8 to 20 or a bit below.

Late 4cyl cars were upgraded to 2200cc, a slightly harsher engine than the 2000, with more power, but less good economy.

The pick of them all was certainly the 3500S - the V8 with manual 4-speed Rover* gearbox. It went like the wind, and produced a lovely note. Power on the S was up on the standard V8, thanks to larger valves, ports and exhaust. Average consumption for my own was 24mpg, 28 touring. You could (if you wanted to) pull away in top gear, and floor the accelerator: the car simply accelerated smoothly all the way to 120mph+, where it just quietly ran out of puff.

The 4-cylinder engines are immensely tough (duplex timing chains). The V8's bottom end will soldier on for ever (provided oil is changed every 3000mi (some will let it do 5000)), but expect to have to renew rockers and rocker shafts at 150,000mi.

All the P6's will benefit from the addition of electric fans, contactless ignition, and a coolant expansion tank (if not already fitted). Maintenance on them all is really straightforward. Bodywork rust is typical Rover, but can be halted easily, with plenty of metal there to weld to - in contrast to SD1 and smaller Leyland offerings. P6 production stopped in 1977.

* Some owners have installed the SD1 V8 5-speed box (a ZF), and easy and well-documented conversion.

Mango looks like it was very much a 70's option fits in with the white rover p6 posted above.

Toledo red is nicely dramatic too :!:

Trouble is, no Rover every left the factory with that colour above, Neil. It's almost vermilion or paprika!
(There was a darker red, on early Series 1's.)

Mango - perfectly coordinated across seats and door trims, looked like this:

I know it's just the vagaries of colour photos, but there are limits! And especially when it comes to Mango and Avocado

It seems that the very. Last Rover P6 off the production line may wel have been very close to an avocado with mango interior :) (although from the "door-open" shot of it is definitely more of a "tan" probably "sandalwood")
