It is not unknown for the ball joint to hang onto the wishbone with a fair degree of grip. A trick that Citronut showed me was to look at the wishbone (close to where it fits with the ball joint), and you will see a couple of widening points. These (Malcolm told me) are where you can whack the wishbone with a decent hammer so as to separate the wishbone from the ball joint stem (which is slightly tapered). It did work well on Gracie.

Ah i think i see where i'm going wrong- To "split" the balljoint means separate it from the wishbone- right??

I was thinking of "splitting" as when you have to remove the ball joint entirely- which is not the case

Am i correct?

Yes, if you take the wishbone off you don't need to Larry but that's going about it the hard way - far easier to split the balljoint and leave the wishbone in place...

I find that no matter how tight, the hub nut comes off easily with my Clarke Impact Driver. Car on stands, wheels off and the unheld hub rotates about 1/4 turn. Amazed me at firs t. No excessive torque, bars, damage etc. I always used to worry when jumping on my breaker bar .

HI- dont have an impact driver, but good to know.

Managed to get gearbox off yesterday so that's good. I now need to take clutch and flywheel off. Problem is I dont have any flywheel locking device-

any tips on methods for locking flywheel to get the nuts off?
also, should I renew all the nuts on refitting?

Mmm The problem is I wanted to do the job today... is there no other trick?

Anything that will lock up the ring gear will do Larry... A big chisel or pry-bar jammed in the ring gear teeth but you'll need assistance...

Do not try locking up using the timing hole. Damage will result!

Note that the flywheel bolts should be replaced with new ones and Loctite applied. It is not recommended to reuse old flywheel bolts...

I would, and new bolts... You'll find these already come coated with Loctite...

Last thing you want is for those to fail after it's all back together....

Well the flywheel locking tool finally arrived so i'm back on the case.

However I've three questions-

- Is it normal that the bellhousing be layered with such a layer of oily gunk?


- Should I replace the clutch lever plastic end-bush whose locking clip seems to have snapped off? Can you buy these parts?


- Should I replace the input shaft oil seal as i'm in there, just in case?

1 No - could have come from the crank seal as it's leaking or the input seal - does it smell like g/box oil?

2 and 3 parts are available from the dealer, but also from ebay in the UK, and they are not dear.

Yes and yes Larry.. Yes in that as you have a leaking seal the mess is to be expected and yes, replace those nylon bushes. They cost pennies and can make a difference to clutch feel..

Replace the drive shaft oil seals and the input shaft seal just in case it's that one leaking too maybe...
