I, for one, love the P6 in avocado. It suits it perfectly and looks gorgeous....

If you don't want the car a visit to the Chateau is worthwhile, a rare building for the Midlands.

Thought you in particular might be interested in that one from your previous posts. Never yet bought anyhing at auction, let alone gone for a major purchase, so it would take a considerable amount of bottle for me to actually go for something like that.

Looking back now, the lovely little Citroen Type C which went for £6,000 at an H&H auction in 2014 looks to me now like an opportunity missed, and which even if carefully stored for the last 2 years, would command a decent return on that initial investment anyway.

Like this one?

You need to be a tad careful about the interior trim, though. Some very late ones (1977, when P6 assembly parts were becoming a bit haphazard) were painted in SD1 colours and SD1 seating, which meant some could end up with Avocado paint, and Mango interior! Not something for a Friday night...

Last P6s off the line (2200) had some special paintwork, including Platinum - a slightly brownish silver. Unfortunately many of the very late P6 panels were painted not at Solihull, but at Longbridge (where SD1 and Metro were assembled). Leyland cocked up big-time with SD1 painting, by getting the high-voltage electrolytic spray painting polarity connected up the wrong way round. This led to bubbles of gas appearing in the paint, with the result that thousands of SD1 bonnets (in particular) were repainted under warranty. Some of the late P6s got caught up in this. (Remember SD1's with peeling bonnet paint?)

A nice alternative to Avocado was Cameron Green (almost British Racing Green), and Lunar Grey (often called moon-green outside the UK). David Bache once talked about choosing body colours for P6. He said that they tried all sorts during the 14 years that the car was in production, and found that few bright colours ever really suited the car - hence the final choice of subtle and mucky colours like Tobacco Leaf, Lunar Grey, Almond, Sage Green, Mexico Brown, and so on. Early P6s even had an old English white, which many preferred to the later ice white.

Something similar for XM: Multimedia Red was quite a shock when it happened for MY 2000.

Tucked away at the bottom of the previous page Chris, the very thing you were talking about!

Lovely in my own 70's tinted opinion, mix it with an avocado P6 and a vinyl roof.....1970's in a fruit salad so to speak!

Neil,
How could I have missed the Previous Page??? Dohhhh...
Yes: terrifically fruity - just like the fabulous exhaust note, iirc.
My 3500S was lunar grey, black leather, and no sunroof.
Miss her greatly, but 2.5 XM more than makes up for it - and no rust worries (I have seen to that).

This is your Lunar Grey Chris. The P6 is always a head turner for me, and I always like to read the additional info you post up on all things Rover :)

As much as I love a P6 in Avocado, even with a Mango interior, I love that Cameron Green one even more :D

Grey for me doesn't work quite as well...

Matthewsons who are behind the motor museum and garage at Thornton-le-Dale near Pickering hold regular classic car auctions and the next one is Saturday July 16th at Roxby Garage, Pickering Road, Thornton Le-Dale, Pickering, North Yorks, YO187LH, starting 10.00am.

The rather awful colour, VX 4/90 which I probably made worse with my own first hand photography, is one of the lots. Its all a matter of personal taste of course. The full catalogue is here, but I'll bring forward a couple of small Frenchies for consideration......which would you prefer

A 1989 Renault 5 GTX (est £1,500-£2,000)

Image

or a 1992 Peugeot 205 CTi (est £5,000-£6,000)

Shocked at the estimate for the 205 but they are lovely, especially in white...

Jim if you were shocked at the estimate for the 205, its roughly the same as this beige mk1 Fiesta with 18,000 miles on the clock (£5,500-£6,500)
