Good point.....I could put a drain into it to cure that problem maybe ?

I don't think it's just draining of the dip at the bottom that's the issue - if you imagine throwing a cup of water into the end of the pipe with the engine running (don't try this at home :-D ) then you could imagine the water hitting the fabric walls of the pipe and being absorbed into the fabric with the excess draining through the fabric and drying out over time. Even though the engine is sucking strongly the twisty path it follows would tend to fling the water out towards the outer edge of the curves where it would be trapped by the fabric.

On a non-porous pipe I think you'd find that that entire cup of water would end up sucked into the engine even if there was a small drain hole at the bottom. Another problem with a discrete drain hole would be that it would almost certainly cause a whistling/whining noise - even a small leak between the two halves of the air filter box or around the edge of the air filter (had this happen to me with a distorted filter) makes a noisy whining noise at certain RPM.

? If that is the case.....why are the other Xantia types not fitted with a similar hose set up ?

Google say: tubing is called a "shannon tube", on the Rover forums it is speculated the fabric is for sound proofing ?....thoughts ?

Have you a link to the thread? I couldn't find it and I'd like a read because I don't think that makes sense.

A big gulp may be 2 pints? I can't imagine that leaving through the pipe walls before meeting the engine.
Performance cars use woven silicon pipes so I can't see the harm in a non porous pipe myself.

I'd missed this page when I wrote this post, it makes more sense if you imagine it at the top of this page.

Possibly this came up when I was trying to work out what was going on.

Good point about the porous nature Simon... Alasdair, you may be best off using a piece from a lesser Xantia and modifying it...

I would Jim....but those are plastic, thus non-porous so why bother ?
That is the conundrum for me. Why would it be so important for the V6 to be a porous design if all the others are not ? What is so special about the Air flow into the V6 ?

I don't think the porosity has anything to do with water ingestion. I think it is for acoustic silencing, which you probably don't care too much about.

This is the corresponding air intake hose for the ES9J4 XM. Note the baypass which is clearly there for acoustic tuning.

I'm assuming that fabric join that dips down in the middle does hang down when installed in the car ? Surely allowing water to escape safely is part of the design of it, if albeit not the only purpose...

Otherwise that would be a massive water trap.

Does anyone have a spare to chuck a couple of pints of water in, and see how quickly it drains out?

All Xantias have the fabric ones, not just the V6...
