Beadnell is one of the listed Boxes as confirmed in this 2002 piece from the Northumberland Gazette.

I used to track down the occasional Royal Observer Corps nuclear monitoring post around the country.... it'd be a good excuse to visit a part of the country or some country lane or some scenic bit of countryside I'd never normally go to.......
Love that type of thing. Would this be whats known as a ROC nuclear monitoring post?

and the one near the Dolphins at Chanonry Point would have to be Fortrose

Finding old plane wrecks is my thing, lots of crash sites in the Snowdonia area from WW2 onwards.
I like the AA boxes and the Nuclear posts, before this thread I had no idea either existed.

Went down a few of those ROC radiation monitoring posts back in the 70s. Pretty grim down there: at the foot of the steel access ladder, a tiny w.c., and then a door into a single room, with one/two single beds, a table, and the remains of phone, power (!) and other wiring. Wall-mounted instructions for inserting the measuring equipment into the ceiling tubes, and the remains of a few phone numbers. A lightly-sealed construction, with no visible means of air control or waste disposal. Used to work with someone who was a "part-time" Observer/Scientific Officer (he was a physics teacher), who would have manned one of these if the call came. He was (then) a confirmed bachelor - an essential qualification, I guess. Gruesome times; if the population at large had known about all this, history might have been a little different.

Disused railways is mine. Always on the lookout for remains of them..

I also spot, in a casual sort of way, ROC posts and it's amazing just how many, in various states of repair, are still extant.

There's one very near me at the top of Chicheley Hill between Newport Pagnell and Olney - on the route of one of my many regular bike rides...

The link above has some good photos of the interior...

After a while, you almost develop "an eye" for where those ROC posts would be - usually on a small hilltop or rise in the land, and almost always next to a road or lane. Think there must have been many hundreds, maybe more, all built to the same design, dotted across the UK.

Something a tad larger:

Purely for reference of course, so you know where to find it should the need arise here is a PDF with all the boxes built or planned up to 1962. Some missing numbers in the sequence......whatever happened to box no 2, conspicuous in its absence between Box number 1 Newingreen, and Box Number 3 Gaydon?

..and how were they used. Well, you broke down next to one in your Ford Consul, and you phoned the AA to come to your assistance....simple :!: :-D

I know I posted this elsewhere, but it is also relevant here. What does an AA man keep in his box? Apparently, his garden tools! (sorry about the size of the picture);

While we were mooching around Beadnell to photograph Box Number 817 on Monday afternoon, I find out today that Beadnell Bay also played host to a pod of around 20 Dolphins the very same day. Maybe on a bank holiday trip down from the Moray Firth :-D
